
Co-Lin outpaces MS Delta in thrilling matchup
MOORHEAD, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves (2-0, 0-0) outlasted the Trojans of Mississippi Delta (1-1, 0-0) on Monday night with a 101-90 victory. The contest had tons of offense with five Co-Lin players scoring in double digits. The Trojans pulled within five points in the final two minutes of play, but the Wolves were able to hold them at bay with impressive shooting late.
"I'm proud of how this teams battles," said Co-Lin head coach Kenny Bizot. "These guys have a lot of confidence in each other and do what ever it takes to grab a win. I was very proud of their performance."
Mississippi Delta came out firing to start the game as the Trojans leapt to an 11-point lead in the first seven minutes of play.
Co-Lin battled back in the following seven minutes of action and tied the game at 37 all with 3:36 remaining in the half. Both teams traded baskets in the remaining minutes and Co-Lin took a two-point, 43-41, lead into the half.
It was all Co-Lin for the bulk of the second half, led by sophomore Jonathan Floyd. The Wolves poured in the baskets and were stout on the defensive end as the Wolves' lead stretched 13, the largest of the game, midway through the half.
Unfortunately the Trojans pushed back late in the game with a 7-2 and 5-2 run on the offensive end that cut the Wolves lead to just five, 92-87, with 3:33 remaining in the game. After trading baskets the Wolves still led by just five with 1:56 remaining. The Wolves buckled down on the defensive end of the floor and ended the contest with a 7-1 run to secure the 101-90 victory.
Jonathan Floyd, a sophomore, led the Wolves with 26 points, 20 of which came in the second half. Freshman Damarius Brooks added 22 points and a five assists. Youry White posted 15 points and eight rebounds, while Jeremy Treaudo came off the bench to score 13. Treaudo also hauled in seven rebounds. Xavier Heidelburg rounded out the Wolves leading scores with 10 points.
Avion Graham led Mississippi Delta with 17 points, while Deshaven Flowers posted 14. Flowers also led the Trojans with 12 rebounds.
Co-Lin shot 49 percent (36-for-73) from the field, 48 percent (13-for-27) from the three-point line, and 70 percent (16-for-23) from the foul stripe. The Trojans shot 53 percent (35-for-66) from the field, 42 percent (10-for-24) from beyond the arc, and 71 percent (10-for-14) from the free throw line.
The Wolves are back in action Thursday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m. as Co-Lin travels to Clarksdale, Miss. to take on the Coahoma Community College Tigers. Follow @colinathletics on Twitter for updates.
