Whitworth scores 31, but Co-Lin falls to Delta, 70 to 66

WESSON, Miss. - Sophomore guard Dajon Whitworth had a career night on Wednesday with 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting, but the Wolves ultimately fell to the Mississippi Delta Trojans 70-66. The loss drops the Wolves to 3-4 on the year and improves the Trojans to 7-3. Co-Lin is back in Mullen this Monday, December 9 as MACJC South Division play begins versus Pearl River Community College. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. and fans can watch the action live at colinathletics.com/watch or listen live at WMJU 104.3 FM in Brookhaven. 

"Offensively we weren't very good tonight, we just couldn't get to our spots which made us guardable," said Co-Lin head coach Kenny Bizot. "We need the little things like diving for a loose ball or grabbing a rebound, things that make you a champion, we just need that edge. We are moving the ball well, we just have to find that right combination of guys on the floor."

The contest was back-and-forth from the opening tip as the lead changed hands 16 times throughout the night. Co-Lin's largest lead came early in the game after a quick 8-2 run midway through the first half. The run saw baskets from Dayquan Perkins, Whitworth, and a big three-pointer from Cameron Woodall and put Co-Lin on top 20-13. Over the next 10 minutes, the Trojans fought back and knotted the game at 33-all going into the locker room. 

The second half was much of the same as the teams traded baskets until the Trojans sparked a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the contest, 53-46, with 12:29 left in the game. The Wolves slowly clawed back into the game before Darius Kent hit a big three-pointer to cut the Trojan's lead to just two, 63-61, with 3:18 to play. The sophomore quickly capitalized on a Delta turnover with a layup and tied the game at with 2:47 remaining. The Wolves got the fans on their feet after another steal led to a basket from Whitworth, giving Co-Lin the lead 65-63. After trading free throws, Delta's Latrell Carter hit a layup and a free throw to tie the game with just over a minute to play. Carter gave the Trojans the lead with another late basket to help secure the Delta victory.

Whitworth's 31 points led the Wolves as he was lights out on the offensive end of the court and played lockdown defense. Perkins also came off the bench with a stellar performance with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Kent rounded out the top performers with eight points. Anfernee Diggins led Delta with 19 points, while three players posted 10. 

Co-Lin shot 43 percent (26-of-61) from the floor, 30 percent (7-of-23) from three-point range, and 54 percent (7-of-13) from the free-throw line. The Lady Trojans shot 43 percent (26-of-60) from the floor, 30 percent (6-of-20) from downtown, and 71 percent (12-of-17) from the stripe. The Wolves outrebounded the Trojans by two, 39 to 37.
