Wolves Cruise Past Tigers

WESSON – The Co-Lin Men's Basketball team resumed conference action by hosting Coahoma on Thursday, February 22. The Wolves never trailed the Tigers in the game as they grabbed a 70-54 victory and stopped a two-game losing streak.

 "It felt good to get back in the win column," stated Co-Lin head coach David Sanders. "Our defense was vastly improved, and I thought the guys played a great game."

The Wolves took an early lead as Courterius Scott (Jackson) made a layup at the 19:13 mark making the score, 2-0. The Wolves then went on a 16-10 scoring run to push their lead to 18-10 with 10:01 left to play in the first half. The teams then matched scoring totals adding five points, but the Wolves held the lead at 23-15 with 5:41 remaining. The Tigers then closed out the half with a 6-5 scoring run, but the Wolves held the lead at 28-21 as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

The Wolves then came out in the opening minutes of the second half with a 10-3 scoring run pushing their lead to 38-24 with 16:36 on the clock. Both teams then added 14 points to their scores as the Wolves maintained their double-digit lead at 52-38 with 10:15 remaining in the second half. The Wolves continued to hold the Tigers at bay with a 10-9 scoring run to increase the lead to 62-47 with 4:17 left to play. The Wolves then closed out the game with an 8-7 scoring run to secure the 70-54 victory.

The Wolves had four players in double-digit scoring as Avaughn Johnson (Jackson) led all scorers with 18 points along with seven rebounds, four steals, and two assists while Courterius Scott had 17 points with four rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Devin Carter (Edwards) and Emmanuel James (Nigeria) had 12 points each with Carter adding three rebounds, three assists, and one steal while James just missed out on a double-double performance with nine rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

Ismail Rashid (Jackson) had seven points and six rebounds while Dakota Hillard (Hazlehurst) had four points and four rebounds to round out the scoring for the Wolves.

Co-Lin improves to 13-9 overall, 5-5 in conference play, and will return to play with a road game against East Central on Monday, February 26. Tip-off between the Wolves and Warriors is set for 7:30 p.m., at Brackeen-Wood Gymnasium in Decatur.
