Wolves finish fourth in golf season opener

RAYMOND, Miss. – The Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College opened the 2017-2018 season with a fourth place finish against MACJC A-Teams at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Raymond, Miss. this past weekend. The No. 8 Wolves carded a 298 on the opening round and a 300 on the second for a team total of 598. Mississippi Gulf Coast won the event with a team total of 565, while Meridian finished with a 573. East Central finished just ahead of Co-Lin with a team total of 295. 

Sophomore Matthew Scoville led the team with a 72 and 73 for a two-day total of 145, just one stroke over par.

Zachary Smith, the Wolves other sophomore, also had a great outing for the first event of the year. Smith, fired a 72 and 74 for a tournament total of 146.

The two sophomores, both from Madison, Miss., landed in the top ten individually with Scoville finishing tied for seventh, while Smith finished tied for tenth.

Freshman Lucas Brewer, a Hohenwald, Tenn. native, had a strong first tournament of his collegiate career. Brewer shot a 76 in the opening round, but bounced back with an even par 72 on the second. He finished the weekend with a 148.

Cameron Little, a freshman from Baton Rouge, La., posted a 78 and an 81 for a two-day total of 159, and Bryce Chapman rounded out the Wolves with an 84 and 86 for a tournament total of 170. Chapman, a freshman, is from Hazlehurst, Miss.

"We know where we stand now as a team and what we are going to have to work on to get better" said Co-Lin head coach Ronny Ross. "Scoville, Smith, and Brewer had great showings for us, but tournaments are won with your fourth and fifth players. Also this was first tournament of the year so now these freshmen know what to expect."
