Lady Wolves split with Baton Rouge Community College to end 2017 season

WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves wrapped up the 2017 season Monday with a doubleheader against the Baton Rouge Community College Lady Bears. Co-Lin won game one 5-2, but fell in game two, 5-3, after going into extra innings. The Lady Wolves finished the 2017 season with an 18-24 overall record and a 12-16 record in MACJC play, just one spot out of the playoffs.

 

Co-Lin 5, BRCC 2

The Lady Bears lit up the scoreboard first with a single to right that plated two runs in the top of the first inning.

Co-Lin's Baily Root cut that lead in half in the bottom of the second with a single that scored Logan Deroche who was running for Jamie Martin. Martin drew a walk to lead off the inning.

Root came up big for the Lady Wolves again in the bottom of the fifth. She tied the game 2-2 with a solo homer, her first of the year, on the first pitch of the inning.

Dianna Hobgood gave the Lady Wolves the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer of her own, and Alex Anthony ripped a single to score Deroche and Alexsundria Thomas to give Co-Lin a 5-2 lead.

Root collected multiple hits for Co-Lin and led the team. Hobgood, Thomas, and Anthony added one each.

Virginia Cacioppo, who posted two hits and two RBIs in the contest, led BRCC at the plate.

Root earned the win for Co-Lin. She pitched seven innings, giving up two runs, seven hits, striking out six, and walking one. Alyssa Bush took the loss for Baton Rouge. She went five and a third innings, surrendering four runs, three hits, and striking out two.

Game two was a pitchers duel as the Lady Bears scored one run in the first and one in the fourth to pull away to a 2-0 lead.

Co-Lin's Taylor Bryant drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh, and Mackenzie Byrd followed. Kamryn Vanlandingham, Co-Lin's leading hitter, blast a stand up double off the fence in left field to tie the game at 2-2.

In the eighth, Baton Rouge scored three quick runs of a single, double, and sacrifice fly to regain the lead 5-2.

Thomas drove in one run for the Lady Wolves in the bottom of the eighth, but it was not enough to take the lead.

Vanlandingham and Hobgood both collected two hits each, while a host of Lady Wolves posted one. Vanlandingham led Co-Lin with two RBIs.

Cacioppo led BRCC with three hits, while Liz Davis and Michala Hughes added two each.

Sydee Mccall earned the win for the Lady Bears. She pitched eight innings, allowing two runs, nine hits, and striking out five. Root took the loss for Co-Lin. She went two innings, giving up two runs, two hits, striking out one, and walking zero.

Christian Black started the game for the Lady Wolves. She threw six innings, allowing two runs, nine hits, and striking out three.
