Co-Lin rallies in the seventh to defeat Marion Military Institute

WESSON, Miss. – The Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College defeated the Marion Military Institute Lady Tigers in thrilling fashion Friday as the Lady Wolves plated five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Julie Scheuermann ripped a double to right field to give Co-Lin the walk-off win. Co-Lin is 2-0 on the year and faces Marion Military in a double header Saturday, Feb. 3 beginning at 11 a.m.

Marion Military jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after a single drove in one run and an error allowed another to cross. Callie Fortenberry responded for the Lady Wolves in the bottom half of the inning with a single that scored Alexsundria Thomas who reached on a single to center. The run cut the Lady Tigers to one, 2-1.

A sac fly plated a run for the Lady Tigers in the top of third, but Co-Lin once again responded. Bailey Root took advantage of an error by Marion Military's first baseman and scored. The run brought the Lady Wolves back in within one, 3-2. Root led off the inning and reached base on a walk.

Three walks in the top of the fourth loaded the bases for the Lady Tigers, but Co-Lin ended the inning on a bizarre triple play. A fly ball to left resulted in one out, and the Lady Wolves recorded the second out with a tag at third base as MMI attempted to advance the runner. Co-Lin also got the third out at third base after it was determined that the Lady Tiger's runner left the bag early. Co-Lin was unable to use the momentum in the bottom of the fourth and trailed 3-2 going into the fifth.

Thomas tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with a blast to right field that made its way to the fence. The triple scored Alex Anthony who reached base on a single earlier in the inning.

The momentum was short lived as the Lady Tiger's Danielle Phillips hit a two-run homer in the bottom top of the sixth with two outs. Going into the bottom of the sixth frame Marion Military led 5-3.

Morgan Gaither stretched the Lady Tiger's lead in the top of the seventh with a towering two-run homerun. Going into the Lady Wolves final at bat MMI led Co-Lin 7-3.

Anthony blasted a stand-up double in the bottom of the seventh and advanced Morgan Dubose to third. Thomas was hit by a pitch and loaded the bases for the Lady Wolves with one out, and Paige Hulin hit a shallow fly ball to right that scored two, cutting the Lady Tiger's lead to 7-5. Fortenberry drove in another for Co-Lin with a groundball up the middle bringing the Lady Wolves within one, 7-6, with runners on the corners.

A double steal by the Lady Wolves scored Hulin, tying the game at 7-7, and Julie Scheuermann followed with a double to right field for a walk-off 8-7 win.

Makenzie Smith was the winning pitcher for Co-Lin, as she went four innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out four and walking one.

Christian Black started the game for the Lady Wolves. She lasted three innings, allowing two hits and three runs while striking out two.

Co-Lin collected 13 hits on the day. Anthony, Thomas, Scheuermann, and Fortenberry each had multiple hits for the Lady Wolves. Anthony led Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves Varsity with three hits in four at bats, while Scheuermann was 2-for-5.

Jaina Walden went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Marion Military Institute in hits.
