Marion Military holds off the Lady Wolves late

WESSON, Miss. – The bats were hot for both teams in game two Saturday as Co-Lin and Marion Military combined for 21 runs on 31 hits, but MMI grabbed the 11-10 win. The loss moves Co-Lin to 2-2 on the season. The Lady Wolves are back in Wesson on Tuesday, Feb. 6 as Co-Lin hosts Southwest for the annual Coca-Cola Classic. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.

MMI took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Co-Lin had a big bottom half of the frame. Back-to-back singles from Paige Hulin and Alex Anthony set up Julie Scheuermann. Scheuermann pulled a triple to deep left scoring the two runners. Abigail Thornton followed later in the inning with a double ripped down the third base line. The grounder scored Taylor Bryant and Morgan Dubose who both reached base on singles. Going into the second the Lady Wolves led 5-1.

A three-run Lady Tiger homer cut the Lady Wolves' lead to just one, 5-4, going into the bottom of the third.

Co-Lin was unable to produce runs in the bottom of the third, and MMI had a big start to the fourth. Jaina Walden hit a solo shot for the Lady Tigers tying the game at 5-5. An RBI single, a wild pitch, and double scored another four for the Lady Tigers giving them a 9-5 advantage.

Scheuermann drove one for Co-Lin in the bottom of the fourth to bring the Lady Wolves within three, 9-6. The standup double was smashed to center field and scored Anthony who doubled earlier.

A single and a sac fly scored two for the Lady Tigers in the top of the fifth and gave MMI an 11-6 lead.

Two singles and an error loaded the bases for the Lady Wolves in the bottom of the sixth. Bryant pulled a ground ball down the third base line and scored two. Dubose followed with a sac fly to right that scored Root, and Thomas drove in Bryant with a single to left. The productive inning brought the Lady Wolves within one, 11-10, going into the final frame.

Neither team was able to plate runs in the final inning allowing MMI to escape with an 11-10 victory.

Alex Reed was the winning pitcher for Marion Military Institute as she went one and one-third innings, allowing zero runs on one hit, striking out two and walking zero.

Dubose took the loss for Co-Lin. She surrendered eight runs on ten hits over three and a third innings, striking out one.

The Lady Wolves had 16 hits on the day. Anthony, Thornton, Bryant, Scheurmann, Hulin, and Dubose each racked up multiple hits for Co-Lin, while Anthony went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Lady Wolves in hits.

Marion Military Institute tallied 15 hits in the game. Walden, Morgan Gaither, and Yasmin Cottingham each collected multiple hits for the Lady Tigers.
