Co-Lin falls behind early in 11-7 loss to Holmes

GOODMAN, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves fell to Holmes 11-7 after the Lady Bulldogs plated six in the bottom of the first inning. The loss moves the Lady Wolves to 3-4 on the season. Co-Lin is back in action Monday, February 19 as the Lady Wolves host Southwest in the Coca-Cola Classic. First pitches are set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Taylor Bryant hit the Lady Wolves first homerun of the season in the first inning of game two of the double header. The two-run shot to left field scored Julie Scheuermann who walked earlier in the inning, and gave the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead.

Four hits and three walks in the bottom of the first frame allowed Holmes to plate six runs and take a 6-2 lead early.

In the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs drove in two more runs off a double and back-to-back singles.

Bryant had another big swing in the top of the fifth. Harmoni Ashley led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. A single from Callie Fortenberry, and a groundball from Scheuermann loaded the bases. Bryant cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field and brought the Lady Wolves within two runs, 8-6.

Holmes stretched their lead by two in the bottom of the fifth after an error and a single brought in two runs. The Lady Bulldogs led 10-6 going into the top of the sixth.

A sacrifice fly from Ashley scored Alex Anthony, the Lady Wolves last run of the game, in the top of sixth. Holmes plated one in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the lead to 11-7.

"We've got to get better results from our starting pitchers," said Co-Lin head coach Allen Kent. "Bryant had an outstanding game going 3-for-4 with two homers and six RBIs. Her two diving catches were great for us. Fortenberry also had a great day at the plate going 5-for-8."

Katie Lawrence earned the win for Holmes. She allowed five hits and six runs over five innings, striking out one and walking one. Juliet Warriner threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Christian Black took the loss for Co-Lin as she lasted two-thirds of an inning, allowing four hits and six runs.

The Lady Wolves posted nine hits on the day. Bryant,  Fortenberry, and Anthony all had multiple hits for Co-Lin. Bryant led the Lady Wolves with three hits and six RBIs.

Holmes racked up ten hits in the game. Madison Fields, Hatcher, Frazier, and Aubree Mcwilliams each collected multiple hits for the Lady Bulldogs.
