Co-Lin defeats Southwest in nightcap, 5-3

SUMMIT, Miss. – Despite being outhit 9-4 the Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College defeated the Southwest Community College Lady Bears 5-3 in the nightcap to earn the MACJC sweep. The win moves the Lady Wolves to 12-7 on the year and to 5-1 in MACJC play.

"Mackenzie Gros earned the win, as Baily Root came on in relief in the sixth and was able to finish them off," said Lady Wolves' head coach Allen Kent. "Once again we had strong pitching performances and played very well defensively…it's always good to get a road sweep."

Southwest got things started in the bottom of the first with a solo home run from Kayla McNabb to jump out to a 1-0 lead.

Co-Lin scratched two across in the top of the third after Callie Fortenberry singled on a line drive to center. The hard-hit ball scored Alexsundria Thomas and Paige Hulin and gave Co-Lin a 2-1 advantage.

The Lady Wolves stretched the lead to 5-1 in the fifth after a wild pitch scored Tori Pettit, and an error plated Fortenberry and Hulin.

The Lady Bears got two back in the bottom half of the fifth frame, but Co-Lin's pitching staff and solid defensive play for the remainder of the contest kept the Lady Bears at bay.

Mackenzie Gros earned the win for the Lady Wolves after she went five and a third innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out one. Bailey Root threw one and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen. Root recorded the last five outs to earn the save for Co-Lin.

Jordan McNabb took the loss for Southwest. She lasted four and a third innings, allowing three hits and four runs while striking out one.

Fortenberry, Scheuermann, Hulin, and Pettit each collected one hit to lead Co-Lin at the plate.
