Lady Wolves pick up key MACJC wins over Pearl River

WESSON, Miss. – The Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln grabbed two very important MACJC wins over Pearl River, 3-0 and 6-5. The wins push the Lady Wolves to 21-16 on the year and 12-10 in MACJC play, which is tied for seventh in the league.

"These were two big division wins," said Co-Lin head coach Allen Kent. "I was really proud of how we battled and held off a solid Pearl River team that has been playing really well…these help bump us up in the playoff chase."

The Lady Wolves are back in Wesson on Friday, April 13 as Co-Lin host Northeast. Games are set to begin at 2 p.m. Fans can watch the action live at colinathletics.com or listen at WMJU 104.3 FM in Brookhaven.

Game One, W, 3-0

Game one was low scoring as Co-Lin's Bailey Root and PRCC's Olivia Holley duked it out in the circle.

Co-Lin put one run on the board in each of the second, third, and fourth innings to secure the win as Root shutout the Lady Wildcats.

The scoring was started by a solo home run from Taylor Bryant in the second. Alex Anthony drove in Paige Hulin in the third and Abigail Thornton brought home Tori Pettit in the fourth for the Lady Wolves final run of the contest.

Root went the distance for the Lady Wolves and grabbed the win. She scattered four hits and gave up zero runs while striking out eight Wildcats.

Hulin led Co-Lin at the plate with two hits in as many at-bats.

"Bailey tossed a great game for us in game one," said Kent. "We also went error-free and got a big home run from Taylor."

Game Two, W, 6-5, 8 innings

Game two was a thrilling matchup as an extra frame was needed to decide the winner.

The Lady Wolves struck first in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Bailey Root that scored Callie Fortenberry who led off the inning with a walk.

A solo homer from PRCC's Halle Malon knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the third, but a base-clearing double from Tori Pettit in the bottom of the fifth put Co-Lin back on top. The fly ball to center scored Fortenberry, Alex Anthony, and Root. Julie Scheuermann kept the momentum going and followed Pettit with an RBI double that gave the Lady Wolves a 5-1 lead.

The Lady Wildcats did not go easily as they plated four runs in the top of the seventh off a double and single to tie the game yet again at 5-5.

In the bottom of the eighth Scheuermann led off with single and was moved to third from a Paige Hulin single and a fielder's choice from Alexsundria Thomas. Scheuermann then took home on a wild pitch for the walk-off Co-Lin victory, 6-5.

Mackenzie Gros started the game for Co-Lin and went six and a third innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out two and walking one, but Christian Black got the victory in the circle. She lasted one and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out two and walking one.

Rylee Swilley took the loss for Pearl River. She lasted two and a third innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out one and walking zero.

Scheurmann led the Lady Wolves at the plate with three hits in four at-bats.

"Gros pitched really well and Christian came in and collected a nice win," said Kent. "Pettit really delivered with a clutch two-out three-run double…I'm just really proud of how we battled."
