Explosive offense pushes Co-Lin past Holmes

WESSON, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves moved to 4-0 on the year after racking up 26 hits and 21 runs in two wins over Holmes Community College, 8-1 and 13-1. The Lady Wolves blasted three home runs from three separate players and played fantastic defense in the field as the team only committed one error on the day. The Lady Wolves are back in action next Tuesday, February 12 as Co-Lin travel to Summit to face Southwest for game one of the Coca-Cola Challenge at 3 p.m. followed by a contest with No. 3 LSU Eunice at 5 p.m.

Game One

The Lady Wolves had hot bats from the start as the team racked up 10 hits through six innings at the plate. Callie Fortenberry led off the bottom of the first with a line drive double and was brought home just two batters later as Hannah Walls belted a home run to deep left. Later in the first, Julie Scheuermann doubled with a deep fly ball to left that plated Harmoni Ashley who reached on a double.

Holmes got on the board in the top of the third with an RBI double from Katie Dana. The shot to center cut Co-Lin's lead to 3-1.

The Lady Wolves had another productive inning in the bottom of the sixth. Katelyn Hayman led off with double followed by a single from Walls. A fielding error scored Hayman and Ashley immediately followed with an RBI double that scored Walls. Scheuermann kept the streak alive with yet another RBI double to plate Ashley and put Co-Lin up 7-1. Marley Poole closed out the explosive inning with a single that plated Scheuermann.

Walls, Ashley, and Scheuermann all led the Lady Wolves with two RBIs and two hits at the plate. Mackenzie Gros got the start and the win from the circle after throwing a complete game. The win moved Gros to 2-0 on the year. The sophomore gave up one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Game Two

Co-Lin kept the intensity up in the second game of the night with 13 runs in the first four innings. Hayman drove in Fortenberry to put Co-Lin on the board early. Scheuermann followed with an RBI single and Poole closed out the hot start with a three-run bomb to left that put the Lady Wolves up 5-0.

Walls drove in yet another run in the bottom of the second with a ground ball down the line that plated Fortenberry.

The Lady Bulldogs of Holmes scraped one across in the top of the third after Skyler Busbea scored on a passed ball.

The Lady Wolves immediately got the bats rolling in the bottom half of the frame after Tori Pettit blasted her first career home run. The two-run shot put Co-Lin on top 8-1.

Pettit led the way at the dish for the Lady Wolves. The sophomore drove in four runs on three hits. Walls and Poole also had fantastic games at the plate with three RBIs each. Kaytlon

In the fourth, Pettit drove in two more runs with a ripped ground ball to left. The hard-hit ball gave Co-Lin a 10-1 lead. Fortenberry drove in two more later in the inning, and another RBI from Walls closed out the inning with Co-Lin up 13-1.

The Lady Wolves played very solid defense and hung on to win the game after five with the run-rule.

Pettit led the Way at the plate with four RBIs after going yard. Poole finished with three RBIs and homer, while Walls posted three RBIs on two doubles. Kaytlon Ward moved to 2-0 on the year after getting the start and throwing four innings. Ward fanned three Lady Bulldogs, gave up four hits, one run, but had no earned runs. Amber Brinson closed the game out in the circle. The freshman gave up no runs and one hit.
