Lady Wolves disrupt NJCAA rankings with two top-five upsets over the weekend

WESSON, Miss. - The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves had an explosive weekend and shook up junior college softball world as the team upset two top-five NJCAA squads. On Friday night, the Lady Wolves swept the No. 3 ranked Des Moines Area Community College Lady Bears, 7-6 and 17-8, before traveling to Brandon to face No. 5 ranked Highland Community College out of Kansas. The Lady Wolves won that game, 8-2. Co-Lin fell to Coastal Alabama-South in their fourth game in just over 24 hours, 6-1. The games move Co-Lin to 10-1 on the year. 

The Lady Wolves got things started early in game one against Des Moines Area as the Lady Wolves poured in three runs after Carlon Brabham launched a three-run shot to left. The Lady Bears responded with a three-run homer in the top of the third, and another three in the top of the fourth to pull away to a 6-3 lead. 

Co-Lin clapped back in the bottom of the fifth with RBIs from Brabham and Marley Poole to cut the lead to just one, 6-5. 

Macy Ziskin knotted the game in the sixth with an RBI double, and Katelyn Hayman shut the door on Des Moines in the bottom of the eighth, with a ripped, walk-off single.

Kaytlon Ward went the distance in the opener as she surrendered six runs on eight hits over the eight innings, striking out 11.

Hayman led the Lady Wolves with three hits, while Barbham drove in four runs. 

Co-Lin had hot bats in the nightcap as Hayman plated one in the bottom of the first. The Lady Bears got four in the top of the second to take the momentum away from the Lady Wolves and get the lead, 4-1, but Co-Lin blew the game wide open in the bottom of the third with an 11-run frame. The big inning saw homers from Brabham and Abigail Carter.

Co-Lin never looked back after the big inning and run-ruled the Lady Bears down the stretch, 17-8.

Karlie Johnson got the win in the circle. She surrendered three runs on no hits over two and a third innings, striking out two.

Carter, Brabham, Hayman, and April Lynn led the team at the plate with multiple hits, while Carter and Brabham both went yard. 

In the contest with Highland, the Lady Wolves bounced back from a one-run deficit with a big, five-run, inning in the top of the third with homers from Lynn and Johnna Norman. Another crossed on a wild pitch. A solo homer from Highland cut the lead to 5-2, but Ziskin ripped a two-run double, in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead to 7-2. Baileigh Jackson closed out the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the seventh. 

Ward once again threw a complete game for Co-Lin. She lasted seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out nine and walking one.

Lynn led Co-Lin at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. 

In Co-Lin's fourth game in just over 24 hours, the Lady Wolves struggled at the plate against Coastal Alabama-South. 

The Sun Chiefs picked up two runs in the top of the first, third, and fifth innings before Co-Lin scratched one back in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer from Brabham. 

Bella Luckey got the start and the loss in the circle for Co-Lin as she went six innings, allowing seven hits and six runs while striking out five. Alexis Garoutte threw in relief. 

Norman, Ziskin, Brabham, and Molly Davis each collected one hit to lead the Lady Wolves at the dish.
