No. 5 Lady Wolves pound Coahoma

WESSON – The No. 5 ranked Co-Lin Lady Wolves pounded out 26 hits to sweep the Coahoma Lady Tigers 20-3 in game one and 5-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.

"Overall, we are happy to start conference play 2-0," said Co-Lin assistant coach Drake Flowers. "But we know if only gets toucher from here. We have to continue to build and get better. We are looking to compete for a state championship, regional championship and a national championship at the end of the year. There's no time to slack up."

GAME 1

The Lady Wolves jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning. Carlon Brabham (Amite, LA/Oak Forest Academy) had a two RBI double to start the scoring. Abigail Carter (Mendenhall/Simpson Academy) smashed an RBI double followed by Cera Blanchard's (Metairie, LA/DeLaSalle High School) 2-RBI double. Molly Johnson (Jackson/Northwest Rankin High School) singled for an RBI. Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, LA/Belle Chasse High School) scored on Molly Davis' (Philadelphia/Leake Academy) ground ball. With one out, Johnson scored on Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson/Wesson Attendance Center) fly ball to give the Lady Wolves an 8-0 lead. Miller's RBI single scored Johnson. Maxwell single to load the bases for Brabham who singled to knock in Davis and Miller. Carter flied out right allowing Maxwell to tag up and score and increase the Co-Lin lead to 14-0.

Co-Lin added six more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Wilkinson led off the inning with a single. With one out, Dekovic drew a walk. Johnson doubled to drive in Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison/Germantown High School). Davis singled plating Dekovic. Miller's RBI single drove in Johnson. Maxwell singled to load the bases for Brabham who's single scored two runs. Carter's fly ball plated Maxwell from third and give Co-Lin a 14-0 lead.

Coahoma finally got on the board with three runs in the top of the third inning.

The Lady Wolves added four more runs to increase their lead to 18-3 in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Johnson reached base on an error. Davis singled and Miller walked to load the bases. Malori Cade (Brookhaven/Loyd Star High School) singled to center field to score Johnson. With the bases loaded, Brabham drew a walk that scored Davis. Wilkinson's RBI single to left field plated Miller. Pinch hitter Julianna Johnson (Monticello/Lawrence County High School) grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Cade and put the Lady Wolves up 18-3.

Co-Lin added their final two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Pinch hitter Leah Beth Luckey's (Mendenhall/Simpson Academy) RBI single. Johnana Norman (Brookhaven/Loyd Star) grounded into a fielder's choice to drive in Leake giving the Lady Wolves a 20-3 lead.

"We came out ready to go in our first conference game," Flowers said. "We were locked in at the plate and on defense for the majority of the game. We were able to get everyone some reps which only continues to make us better moving forward."

At the plate for Co-Lin, Brabham continued to swing a hot bat as she went 2-for-3 for five RBIs to lead the Lady Wolves 18 hit attack. Wilkinson had a double and a pair of singles. Madi Miller, Johnson, Davis and Cade had multiple hits. Leah Beth Luckey doubled.

Co-Lin's Blanchard picked up her third win of the season. She held the Lady Tigers

hitless and struck out three in two innings of work. Also seeing action in the circle were Wilkinson who allowed three runs on two hits, struck out one and walked three, Alli Grace Albritton (Summit/Parklane Academy) and Alexis Garoutte (Alexandria, LA/Pineville High School) both struck out three.

GAME 2

Co-Lin pitcher Bela Luckey (Mendenhall/Simpson Academy) tossed the complete game shutout scattering four hits, striking out two and walking one.

The Lady Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom first inning. Wilkinson doubled in a run to put the Lady Wolves up 1-0. With two outs, Blanchard reached on an error by the third baseman that scored two runs.

In the bottom of the third Co-Lin's Wilkinson doubled and scored on Blanchard's double. Blanchard scored after tagging up on Norman's fly out to give the Lady Wolves a 5-0 lead.

"It's always good to sweep a conference series in this league," Flowers said. "So we were happy to get the win in game two. We have to do a better job of maintaining our intensity from game one to game two. Those things will hopefully come as we keep playing and get in a groove."

Maxwell, Wilkinson and Norman had multiple hit games. Adding support with a hit apiece were Blanchard and Miller.
