Carter’s walk-off gives Lady Wolves win

WESSON – Co-Lin catcher Abigail Carter hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the No. 5 ranked Co-Lin Lady Wolves a 5-4 win over No. 9 ranked Jones College in game one of a doubleheader. The Lady Bobcats (23-7) took the nightcap 3-2.

GAME 1

The Lady Wolves (22-4, 17-3) trailed Jones 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. Malori Cade (Brookhaven/Loyd Star High School) led off the inning with a walk. Madi Miller was hit by a pitch. Carlon Brabham (Amite, LA/Oak Forest Academy) smashed a home run over the left field fence to tie the game at 4-4. Carter, a sophomore from Mendenhall followed with a walk-off home run to win the game for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Brabham singled. Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison/Germantown High School) drew a walk. Cera Blanchard's (Metairie, LA/De La Salle High School) RBI single to center scored Brabham.

The Lady Bobcats took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth on Lauren Pope's RBI single and Kat Wallace's sacrifice fly.

Jones increased their lead to 4-1courtesy of a couple of Co-Lin errors.

Blanchard posted the win for Co-Lin. Blanchard (12-1) tossed the complete game allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits, struck out five and walked three.

Nia Luckett absorbed the loss for Jones. She allowed four runs on two hits, struck out three and walked three.

At the plate for Co-Lin, Brabham had a home run and a single for three RBIs. Carter had a home run and a single for two RBIs. Molly Johnson (Jackson/Northwest Rankin High School). Cade and Blanchard had a single apiece.

For Jones, Pope, Wallace and Meagan Wynne collected a hit apiece.

GAME 2

In the nightcap, Jones struck first with two runs in the first inning. Luckett scored on Lauren Lindsey's RBI single. With the bases loaded, Pope's sacrifice fly to center field scored Lindsey to put the Lady Bobcats up 2-0.

Kristian Edwards solo home run in the top of the third inning gave the Lady Bobcats a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves scratched a run in the bottom of the third. Carter reached on an error. Wilkinson followed with a single. Blanchard was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Johnson's ground out to second scored Carter to cut the Jones lead to 3-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Carter reached on an error and advanced to second on another Bobcat error. Wilkinson's ground out advanced pinch runner Faith Ashley (Brandon/Pisgah High School) to third. Ashley was able to score on Blanchard's ground out to pull the Lady Wolves to within one run at 3-2.

Bella Luckey (10-2) absorbed the loss for the Lady Wolves. She allowed three earned runs on eight hits, struck out one and walked three in seven innings of work.

Miller, Wilkinson, Blanchard (one RBI) and Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, LA/Belle Chasse High School) hit safely for the Lady Wolves.

For Jones, Luckett, Lindsey and Edwards had multiple hits. Hitting safely were Tyesha Cole and Kat Knight.

Next up:  The Lady Wolves will host the Northeast Lady Tigers for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 10, beginning at 2 p.m.
