Lady Wolves sweep Hinds on Sophomre Day

WESSON – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves swept a doubleheader from the Hinds Lady Eagles 3-2 and 9-5 on Sophomore Day. Nine sophomores were honored prior to the first game including Alexis Garoutte of Alexandria, Louisiana; Baileigh Jacison and Karly Leake, both of Bogue Chitto; Carlon Brabham of Amite, Louisiana; Julianna Johnson of Monticello, Bella Luckey, Leah Beth Luckey and Abigail Carter, all of Mendenhall and Molly Johnson of Philadelphia.

GAME 1

Co-Lin freshman pitcher Cera Blanchard (Metairie, LA/De La Salle High School) had another strong outing in the circle giving up two earned runs on eight hits, striking out nine and walking one in seven innings of work. She improves to 14-1 on the season.

The Lady Wolves took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Malori Cade (Brookhaven/Loyd Star High School) drew a walk. Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, LA/Belle Chase High School) hit a two run home run to put Co-Lin up 2-0.

Hinds would answer with two runs in the top of the fifth inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Natalie Parker and Savannah Bryant.

Co-Lin would take the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning on Madalyn Wilkinson's (Madison/Germantown High School) solo home run over the center field fence.

Ashley Lopez suffered the loss. She allowed three earned runs on six hits, struck out one and walked three in six innings.

At the plate for the Lady Wolves, Wilkinson had a home run and a double. Dekovic homered and Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson/Wesson High school) doubled. Adding support with a single apiece were Blanchard and Cade.

For Hinds, Ashley Lightcap had three hits. Brennan Newell had a pair of hits. Hannah Tauzin, Parker and Bryant collected a hit apiece.

GAME 2

Co-Lin would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Madi Miller (Brookhaven/Brookhaven High School) led off the inning with a single. She stole second and advanced to third on Shelbi Maxwell's (Wesson/Wesson High School) ground out. She would tag up and score on Brabham's sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the second inning, Blanchard would hit a stand up double to left field. Dekovic drew a walk. Mallory Johnson (Jackson/Northwest Rankin High School) doubled that plated Blanchard. Karly Leake's (Bogue Chitto/Bogue Chitto High School) single to center field scored Dekovic and gave the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead.

Hinds would close the gap to 3-2 in the top of the third on an RBI single by Parker followed by a Bryant double.

Brabham led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run over the center field fence increasing the Co-Li lead to 4-2.

The Lady Eagles picked up a run in the top of the fourth on a Lopez RBI single.

In the bottom of the fourth with one out, Miller and Maxwell hit back-to-back singles. Miller would score on Brabham's RBI single to right. Maxwell would score on Wilkinson's sacrifice fly to put the Lady Wolves up 6-3.

Bruner's solo home run in the top of the sixth cut the Co-Lin lead to 6-4.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Brabham doubled. Abigail Carter (Mendenhall/Simpson Academy) singled. Wilkinson would hit a three-run home run, her second home run of the day, and give the Lady Wolves a 9-4 lead.

Hinds would pick up a run in the top of the seventh, but Garoutte would get Fields to ground out to end the game.

Bella Luckey (Mendenhall/Simpson Academy) would pick up the win for Co-Lin. She tossed six innings giving up four earned runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked two. Alexis Garoutte (Aleandria, LA/Pineville High School) pitched the final inning allowing one earned run on two hits, striking out one and walking one.

Absorbing the loss was Natalie Parker. Parker tossed six innings giving up nine earned runs, 13 hits, struck out two and walked five.

Brabham went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and a single for there RBIs. Miller  had a pair of singles. Wilkinson homered for four RBIs. Blanchard and Johnson doubled. Collecting a single apiece were Maxwell, Carter, Cade and Leake.

At the plate for Hinds, Katherine Bruner homered, doubled and singled. Bryant had a pair of hits. Collecting a hit apiece were Tauzin, Parker, Rebekah Fields, Lopez and Ava Aslam.

Next up:  The Lady Wolves travel to Perkinston for a doubleheader with the No. 4 ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs beginning at 2 p.m.
