Lady Wolves Sweep Doubleheader Against Lansing

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team played host to Lansing (MI) in a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday, March 9. The Lady Wolves swept the Stars taking game one, 8-0, and game two, 5-0.

Game One

The Lady Wolves jumped out to an early lead in the second inning as they plated two runs as Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson) and Cera Blanchard (Metairie, La.) hit back-to-back singles with one-out. Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) then doubled while Maxwell scored on an error during the play and Blanchard also scored making the score 2-0.

The Lady Wolves then increased their lead to 5-0 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Meggs hit a two-out double and then scored on a double by Megan Loyd (Brandon). Malori Cade (Brookhaven) then took one swing at a 1-0 pitch and deposited it to center field for a two-run home run (her second of the season).

The final three runs for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the fifth inning as Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison) was hit-by-pitch and then stole second. Wilkinson advanced to third on a bunt single by Maxwell. After Maxwell stole second, Blanchard took one swing of the bat and delivered a walk-off three-run home run to left field (her first of the season) to end the game and seal the 8-0 win.

Shelbi Maxwell, Cera Blanchard, and Josie Meggs all had multi-hit games with two hits each as the Lady Wolves had nine hits during the game. Madi Miller (Brookhaven), Megan Loyd, and Malori Cade had one hit apiece. Blanchard led the Lady Wolves with three RBIs, while Cade had two, with Meggs and Loyd getting one RBI each.

Cera Blanchard got the start in the circle and was dominant in the complete game win improving to 7-1 on the season. Blanchard allowed just one hit and had five strikeouts.

Game Two

The Lady Wolves once again grabbed the lead in the second inning scoring one run as Shelbi Maxwell hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third, and then scored on a passed ball to make the score 1-0.

The Lady Wolves increased their lead with three runs in the fourth as Madalyn Wilkinson got the offense going with a one-out double. Belle West (Byram) then took an 0-2 pitch and deposited behind the right field fence for a two-run home run (her first of the season) to make the score 3-0. Josie Meggs then drew a walk, advanced to third on a single by Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, La.) and scored on a single by Malori Cade to make the score 4-0.

The final run for the Lady Wolves came in the bottom of the fifth as Wilkinson drew a two-out walk and then was lifted for a pinch runner in Faith Ashley (Brandon). Ashley then stole second, advanced to third on a single by Maxwell, and then later scored on a passed ball to make the score 5-0.

The Lady Wolves then used two back-to-back three-up-and-three-down innings in the sixth and seventh to secure the 5-0 win.

Shelbi Maxwell was the only member of the Lady Wolves with a multi-hit game in the contest going 2-for-3 at the plate. Madi Miller, Madalyn Wilkinson, Belle West, Bela Dekovic, and Malori Cade all had one hit apiece as the Lady Wolves totaled seven hits during the game. West led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with two while Cade had one RBI.

Belle West and Madalyn Wilkinson were dominant in the circle for the Lady Wolves as they pitched a combined no-hitter in the shutout win. West got the start and improved to 7-0 pitching five innings with one walk and five strikeouts, while Wilkinson pitched two innings with three strikeouts. This was the second combined no-hitter for Belle West this season as she also was part of the combined no-hitter with Alli Albritton (Summit) against Coastal Alabama-East on February 19.

Co-Lin is now 14-2 overall and the Lady Wolves will return to action opening conference play on the road against Coahoma on Sunday, March 13. First pitch between the Lady Tigers and the Lady Wolves is scheduled for 1 p.m.
