Lady Wolves Get Ninth Straight Conference Play Sweep
WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team played host to Mississippi Delta in a conference play doubleheader on Saturday, April 9. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Trojans taking game one, 10-2, and game two, 8-0.
Game One
The Lady Wolves got the scoring started early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Madi Miller (Brookhaven) drew a lead-off walk, stole second and then scored on an RBI-triple by Maddie Weeks (Clinton) making the score, 1-0. Weeks then scored on a sacrifice fly by Madalyn Wilkinson (Madison) increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 2-0.
The Lady Trojans then scored their only two runs of the game in the top of the second tying the game at 2-2. However, the Lady Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning as Bela Dekovic (Belle Chasse, La.) and Malori Cade (Brookhaven) were hit-by-pitch in back-to-back at-bats. Shelbi Maxwell (Wesson) then drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Dekovic then scored on a sacrifice fly by Weeks while Cade scored on an error, and Maxwell then scored on an RBI-double by Wilkinson making the score, 5-2.
The Lady Wolves added two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Maxwell hit a one-out single and then advanced to third on a single by Weeks who also advanced to second on the play. Maxwell then scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilkinson while Weeks scored on an RBI-single by Cera Blanchard (Metairie, La.) making the score, 7-2.
The Lady Wolves then sent five batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and scoring three runs as Mary Ansley Chrestman (Cleveland) hit a lead-off single. After Chrestman stole second, Dekovic then took one swing of the bat and drove a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run (her second of the season) making the score, 9-2. Cade and Miller then hit back-to-back singles while Maxwell then delivered a walk-off RBI-single scoring Cade and giving the Lady Wolves a 10-2 victory in game one.
Shelbi Maxwell and Maddie Weeks led the Lady Wolves with two hits apiece. Madi Miller, Madalyn Wilkinson, Cera Blanchard, Mary Ansley Chrestman, Bela Dekovic, and Malori Cade got one hit each as the Lady Wolves totaled 10 hits including one double for Wilkinson, one triple for Weeks, and one home run for Dekovic. Wilkinson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Weeks and Dekovic had two RBIs each, and Maxwell and Blanchard adding one RBI apiece.
Cera Blanchard got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolves and improved to 17-1 overall with the complete game win. Blanchard pitched five innings allowing two runs on one hit with five strikeouts and one walk. The Southeastern Louisiana commit gave up her first two earned runs of conference play after 56.1 innings pitched with the two runs scored in the second inning.
Game Two
The Lady Wolves broke a scoreless tie in game two with one run in the bottom of the second as Belle West (Byram) and Bela Dekovic drew back-to-back walks with two outs while West then scored on an RBI-single by Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) giving the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Wolves increased their lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning as Shelbi Maxwell drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on single by Maddie Weeks. Maxwell and Weeks then scored on a two-RBI double by Cera Blanchard who then later scored on an RBI-single by Dekovic giving the Lady Wolves a 4-0 lead.
The Lady Wolves doubled their lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth as Maxwell reached on an error, stole second, and then scored on an RBI-double by Weeks. Weeks then scored on an RBI-single by Wilkinson giving the Lady Wolves a 6-0 lead. Blanchard and West then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Laurel Breland (Lake) and Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, Ala.) drew back-to-back walks with two outs scoring Wlkinson and Blanchard respectively and giving the Lady Wolves an 8-0 lead.
The Lady Trojans got a lead-off single in the top of the fifth, but a double play followed by a fly out ended the inning and secured the 8-0 victory and sweep for the Lady Wolves.
Maddie Weeks led the Lady Wolves offense in game two as the only member of the team with a multi-hit game going 2-for-3 at the plate. Madalyn Wilkinson, Cera Blanchard, Bela Dekovic, and Josie Meggs got one hit apiece as the Lady Wolves totaled six hits including one double each for Blanchard and Weeks. Blanchard led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with two while Weeks, Wilkinson, Dekovic, Meggs, Laurel Breland, and Lila Blackburn had one RBI each.
Belle West got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 15-0 pitching four innings allowing three hits with five strikeouts. Alli Albritton (Summit) pitched one inning of relief allowing one hit.
Co-Lin is now 32-2 overall and 18-0 in conference play. The Lady Wolves return to action hosting East Central in a conference play doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12. First pitch between the Lady Warriors and the Lady Wolves is set for 3 p.m., in Wesson.
