Lady Wolves Sweep Road Doubleheader Against Lady Bears

SUMMIT – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action on the road against Southwest on Tuesday, April 18. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Bears earning a shutout win in game one, 7-0, and then exploded offensively in game two for the 14-3 win.

"It was great to see our team come out fired up and ready for these two wins," stated Co-Lin head coach Meleah Howard. "I am really happy with how well we performed both at the plate and on the basepaths today."

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves got their scoring started with a pair of runs in the top of the first as Josie Meggs (Kosciusko) started the game off reaching base on an error and then stole second. Meggs then advanced to third as Maddie Weeks (Clinton) reached on an error to put runners on the corners for the Lady Wolves. The Lady Wolves then pulled off the double steal as Weeks took second while Meggs stole home making the score, 1-0. Weeks then scored on a two-out RBI double by Belle West (Byram) increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 2-0.

The Lady Wolves added one run in the top of the second as Madison Moak (Brookhaven) hit a two-out single and then scored on an RBI triple by Meggs making the score, 3-0. The Lady Wolves added two more runs in the top of the third as Weeks drew a leadoff walk but was then forced out as Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) reached on a fielder's choice. Richardson then stole second and advanced to third on a single by West while both then scored on a two-RBI double by Zykeria Cole increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 5-0.

The Lady Wolves added a solo run in the top of the fourth as Moak hit a leadoff double and then scored on a one-out RBI single by Faith Kivett (Tallulah, LA). The final run for the Lady Wolves came in the seventh inning as Weeks hit a leadoff single and then later stole second and scored on a one-out RBI single by West making the score, 7-0.

The Lady Bears then loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but a pop out ended the game securing the shutout win in game one for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team with Belle West and Madison Moak leading the way with three hits apiece while Zykeria Cole added two hits along with Josie Meggs, Faith Kivett, and Maddie Weeks adding one hit each. West and Cole led the Lady Wolves with two RBIs each while Meggs and Kivett had one RBI each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and improved to 10-1 with the complete game shutout win allowing seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game saw the Lady Wolves jump out to a big lead early in the first with a six-run inning started with a leadoff single by Josie Meggs followed up with a double by Faith Kivett. Meggs then scored on an RBI single by Maddie Weeks. Abby Grace Richardson then stepped up, took one swing of the bat, and smashed an 0-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for a three-run home run giving the Lady Wolves a 4-0 lead just four batters into the game.

Belle West then followed with a single and later advanced to third on a one-out double by Skyler Speights (Monticello). Both then scored on a two-out, two-RBI double by Madison Moak increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 6-0.

However, the Lady Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the first and one run in the bottom of the second to cut the Lady Wolves lead in half at 6-3. After a scoreless third inning, the Lady Wolves had another big inning with an eight-run top of the fourth started with back-to-back singles by Laney Waguespack (Des Allemands, LA) and Moak.

Meggs then hit a bunt single while an error on the play allowed Waguespack and then a fourth straight single by Kivett scored Moak and Meggs, who stole second earlier in the inning. After Kivett was caught stealing for the first out, Weeks stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run making the score 10-3. Richardson then followed with a double and then scored on an RBI single by West making the score, 11-3. Cole followed with a single while Speights drew a walk to load the bases with one out. West then scored on a fielder's choice by Waguespack while Cole was forced out at home on a fielder's choice by Moak. Speights and Waguespack then scored on a two-RBI single by Meggs making the score, 14-3.

The Lady Wolves then retired six straight batters for the Lady Bears across the fourth and fifth innings sealing the game two win and sweep for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 17 hits as a team with Josie Meggs leading the way going 3-for-4 at the plate while Faith Kivett, Maddie Weeks, Abby Grace Richardson, Belle West, and Zykeria Cole had two hits each with Zykeria Cole, Skyler Speights, Laney Waguespack, and Lizzy Hollingsworth (Decatur) had one hit each. Richardson led the Lady Wolves with three RBIs while Meggs, Kivett, Weeks, and Moak had two RBIs each with West and Waguespack adding one RBI apiece.

Lila Blackburn (Red Bay, AL) got the start for the Lady Wolves and earned a no-decision pitching one inning and allowing three runs, two earned, on one hit with two walks and one strikeout. Laney Waguespack picked up the win in relief improving to 6-0 on the season while pitching three scoreless innings allowing two hits with three strikeouts. Belle West pitched one scoreless and hitless inning of relief retiring all three batters she faced.

Co-Lin improves to 30-8 overall, 17-3 in conference play, and will return to action for their final regular season road trip at East Mississippi on Saturday, April 22. First pitch between the Lady Lions and the Lady Wolves is set for 1 p.m., in Scooba.
