Lady Wolves Split Day at Hinds JUCO Classic

VICKSBURG – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action with a doubleheader at the Hinds JUCO Classic on Saturday, February 24. The Lady Wolves split the day dropping their first game against No. 4 Parkland, 6-4, in extra innings, and the rebounded for a game two win, 7-2, over Baton Rouge.

GAME ONE

The Cobras took an early lead in the top of the first with back-to-back solo home runs making the score, 2-0. However, the Lady Wolves responded with a pair of runs as Madison Moak (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff triple while Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) drew a walk to put runners on the corners with no outs. Moak and Madere later scored in the inning on a two-RBI double by Kinley Ainsworth (Brandon) to tie the game at 2-2.

The Cobras looked to retake the lead as they loaded the bases with two outs, but a line out ended the inning with no scoring done while the Lady Wolves then took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Madere got the offense going by reaching base on an error and then Carson Hughey was brought in as a pinch runner. Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) then took one swing and crushed a two-run home run over the left field fence, her fourth of the season, to give the Lady Wolves a 4-2 lead.

The Cobras then scored two runs in the sixth on a solo home run and an error by the Lady Wolves to tie the game. The Lady Wolves then got the go-ahead run to second base in the sixth inning, but a groundout kept the run off the board while the team had two runners on with two outs in the seventh, but a pop out ended the inning and sent the game to extra innings.

The Cobras scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 6-4 lead over the Lady Wolves. The Lady Wolves then got two runners on with two outs in the bottom half, but a strikeout ended the inning sealing the 6-4 win for the Cobras.

Kinley Ainsworth led the Lady Wolves offense going 2-for-4 at the plate while Madison Moak, Abby Grace Richardson, and Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) had one hit each. Ainsworth and Richardson had two RBIs each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and moved to 0-1 on the season. Biswell pitched 7.1 innings allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) pitched 0.2 innings of relief forcing a double play by the only batter she faced in the outing.

GAME TWO

The Lady Wolves got off to a fast start in their second game of the day scoring two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. Madison Moak hit a leadoff single to get the offense started. After Moak stole second, Abby Grace Richardson needed just two pitches to make an impact as she smashed a 1-0 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run, her fifth of the season, making the score, 2-0.

The Lady Wolves then doubled their lead with a pair of runs in the second as Leia Phillips led off by drawing a walk. Phillips stole second, took third on a passed ball, and then scored as Moak reached on an error and scored on the play to give the Lady Wolves a 4-0 lead. The Lady Wolves added another pair of runs in the third as Richardson hit a leadoff single. Zykeria Cole (Magee) then hit a one-out, RBI double scoring Richardson while a second straight double by Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) scored Cole to increase the Lady Wolves lead to 6-0.

The Lady Bears then scored their two runs in the bottom of the fourth cutting the lead down to 6-2. The final run of the game for the Lady Wolves came in the top of the seventh as Richardson stepped up to the plate with two outs and crushed the first pitch of the at-bat over the center field fence for a solo home run, her second of the game and sixth of the season, making the score, 7-2.

The Lady Bears then got two runners on with two outs, but a fielder's choice ended the game and secured the 7-2 win for the Lady Wolves.

Abby Grace Richardson led the way for the Lady Wolves offense going 3-for-4 at the plate while Madison Moak had a 2-for-3 game with Zykeria Cole, Emeri Warren, and Leia Phillips adding one hit each. Richardson also led the team in RBIs with three while Cole and Warren had one RBI each.

Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) got the start and improved to 2-0 with the win. McCorkle pitched three scoreless innings allowing just two hits with two walks. Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) pitched two innings of relief allowing two runs, both earned, on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts while Karley Rouse (D'Iberville) pitched two innings of scoreless and hitless relief with one walk and two strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 3-1 overall and will return to action hosting Baton Rouge for their home opener on Tuesday, February 27. First pitch between the Lady Bears and the Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Lady Wolves Softball Field in Wesson.
