Lady Wolves Sweep Lady Bears in Home Opener

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team hosted Baton Rouge for their 2024 home opener on Tuesday, February 27. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Bears taking game one, 5-2, and game two, 9-4.

GAME ONE

The Lady Bears got out to an early lead in the top of the first behind a two-run home run making score, 2-0. However, the Lady Wolves responded with a solo run in the bottom half as Madison Moak (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff single and then later scored on a two-out, RBI-single by Kinley Ainsworth (Brandon) cutting the lead down to 2-1.

The Lady Wolves then took the lead in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs as Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Moak then stepped up and smashed a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence to give the Lady Wolves a 3-2 lead.

The final two runs of the game for the Lady Wolves came in the third inning as Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff single and then Ainsworth crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence increasing the lead to 5-2.

The Lady Bears had just one baserunner from the second through sixth innings that reached on an error to start the second innings as Cara Biswell (Brandon) and the Lady Wolves retired 15 straight batters after that. The Lady Bears then got a leadoff single in the seventh while a second baserunner reached base on an error putting two on with one out; however, a fly out and a strikeout ended the game securing the 5-2 win for the Lady Wolves.

Madison Moak led the Lady Wolves offensively going 3-for-4 at the plate while Kinley Ainsworth and Leia Phillips both went 2-for-3 with Carson Hughey (Brookhaven), Abby Grace Richardson, Zykeria Cole (Magee), and Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) had one hit each. Ainsworth led the Lady Wolves with three RBIs while Moak had two.

Cara Biswell pitched a complete game and improved to 1-1 with the win allowing two earned runs on three hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Lady Wolves got on the board with single run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead over the Lady Bears. Madison Moak drew a leadoff walk while Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) followed with a single advancing Moak to third base. Moak then stole home making the score, 1-0.

The Lady Wolves added another solo run in the bottom of the first as Leia Phillips lasered a 1-2 pitch over the centerfield fence increasing the lead to 2-0.

The Lady Wolves lead held til the fifth inning when the Lady Bears took advantage of a two-run error and a sacrifice fly to score three runs and take a 3-2 lead. However, the Lady Wolves responded with a single run in the bottom half of the inning as Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) and Moak hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Richardson later drew a walk to load the bases with one out while Goodson then scored on a sacrifice fly by Kinley Ainsworth tying the game at 3-3.

The Lady Bears then took advantage of another Lady Wolves error to score a run and take a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning. The Lady Wolves then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding lead over the Lady Bears. Phillips and Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) hit back-to-back singles to start the inning while Emma Kate Fimiano was then brought in as a pinch runner for Efferson. Phillips then scored on a third straight single by Carson Hughey to tie the game at 4-4. Goodson then hit a fourth consecutive single scoring Fimiano from second to give the Lady Wolves a 5-4 lead. Abby Grace Richardson then reached base on an error allowing Hughey to score while a two-RBI double by Kinley Ainsworth scored Goodson and Richardson and increased the Lady Wolves lead to 8-4. Ainsworth scored the final run of the inning as Phillips reached on an error making the score, 9-4.

The Lady Bears then got a leadoff double in the top of the seventh, but that was followed with a line out, fly out, and strikeout to end the game securing the game two win and sweep for the Lady Wolves.

Kynlee Madere. Kinley Ainsworth, Leia Phillips, and Bailee Goodson each had 2-for-3 games at the plate while Madison Moak, Taylor Efferson, and Carson Hughey had one hit each. Ainsworth led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Phillips, Hughey, and Goodson had one RBI each.

Taylor Efferson got the start and improved to 1-0 on the season while pitching six innings and allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts. Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) pitched one inning of scoreless relief allowing one hit with one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 5-1 overall and will return to action on the road against Dillard University on Thursday, February 29. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Bleu Devils is set for 1 p.m., at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans.
