Lady Wolves Shutout Dillard in Doubleheader

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to play with a road doubleheader against Dillard University on Thursday, February 29. The Lady Wolves swept the Bleu Devils with a pair of shutouts taking game one, 8-0, and game two, 9-0.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves scored their first two runs of the game in the top of the first as Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) got the offense going with a one-out single, while Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) then reached on an error. Back-to-back RBI singles with two outs by Zykeria Cole (Magee) and Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) scored Madere and Richardson respectfully giving the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves added three runs in the second inning as Sarah Grace Smith was hit-by-pitch to start the inning and then stole second. Smith then scored on an RBI single by Madison Moak (Brookhaven) while Richardson later drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs. After Richardson stole second, Kinley Ainsworth (Brandon) reached on an error scoring both Moak and Richardson increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 5-0.

The Lady Wolves scored their final three runs in the third inning as Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff bunt single and then stole second. Smith then followed with a double scoring Goodson while Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) then hit a bunt single and stole second. An error in the field allowed Smith to score and Hughey to advance to third while Hughey then scored on an RBI single by Moak giving the Lady Wolves an 8-0 lead.

The Bleu Devils then had two combined baserunners in the fourth and fifth innings as the Lady Wolves secured the 8-0 victory.

Madison Moak, Zykeria Cole, and Leia Phillips had two hits apiece while Kynlee Madere, Bailee Goodson, Sarah Grace Smith, and Carson Hughey had one hit each. Moak, Cole, Phillips, and Smith had one RBI each.

Cara Biswell got the start and improved to 2-1 with the win while pitching four innings allowing three hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Karley Rouse (D'Iberville) pitched one inning of relief with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The Lady Wolves jumped out to a big lead in the second game of the day scoring six runs in the top of the first.

Madison Moak drew a leadoff walk and then advanced to second on a passed ball. After Leia Phillips drew a second straight walk, Moak then stole third. Phillips then stole second base while Moak scored on a steal of home making the score, 1-0. After Kinley Ainsworth drew a third consecutive walk, Phillips scored on a two-base error while Ainsworth went from first to third on the same error making the score, 2-0. A fourth straight walk issued to Abby Grace Richardson then gave the Lady Wolves two runners on with no outs. Richardson then stole second while Ainsworth scored on an error in the field making the score, 3-0. Zykeria Cole delivered the first RBI of the game scoring Richardson on a double while Cole then later stole third. After Bailee Goodson drew a walk, the fifth in the inning, and stole second, Cole scored on a sacrifice fly by Sarah Grace Smith. Goodson scored the final run of the inning on an RBI triple by Maddie Bruner (Brandon) increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 6-0.

The Lady Wolves then added a single run in the second as Ainsworth drew a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Richardson making the score, 7-0. The final two runs for the Lady Wolves came in the fifth as Goodson hit a one-out single, stole second and third, and then scored an RBI single by Carson Hughey. Hughey then stole second and third, and then scored on an RBI groundout by Emma Kate Fimiano (Petal) making the score, 9-0.

The Lady Wolves then retired the Bleu Devils in order in the bottom of the fifth to seal the 9-0 game two win and sweep.

Bailee Goodson led the Lady Wolves offense going 2-for-2 at the plate while Madison Moak, Abby Grace Richardson, Zykeria Cole, Carson Hughey, Maddie Bruner, and Laney Waguespack (Bayou Gauche, LA) had one hit each. Richardson, Cole, Hughey, Bruner, Sarah Grace Smith, and Emma Kate Fimiano had one RBI each.

Karley Rouse got the start for the Lady Wolves and pitched one inning allowing three hits with one walk. Laney Waguespack pitched two innings of relief allowing two hits with three strikeouts, while Emma Kate Fimiano picked up the win (1-0) also pitching two innings of scoreless and hitless relief with three strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 7-1 overall and will host Shelton State on Monday, March 4. First pitch between the Lady Bucs and Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Lady Wolves Softball Field in Wesson.
