Lady Wolves Sweep Lady Eagles

MERIDIAN – The Co-Lin Softball team resumed conference action with a road doubleheader against Meridian on Monday, April 8. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Eagles taking game one with an 8-6 come-from-behind win and then taking game two with an 11-3 run-rule victory.

GAME ONE

The Lady Eagles got on the board first plating one run in the bottom of the first after a bases loaded walk to make the score, 1-0.

The Lady Wolves were then held to two baserunners combined in the second through fourth innings as the Lady Eagles maintained their 1-0 lead. The Lady Eagles big inning came in the bottom of the fourth as they score five runs to grow their lead to 6-0.

The Lady Wolves comeback then started with four runs in the top of the fifth as Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) hit a leadoff single while Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs. Later in the inning, Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) crushed a 3-1 pitch for an opposite field three-run home run to cut the deficit down to 6-3. Taylor Efferson (Holden) later drew a walk with two outs while Avery Williams (Olive Branch) was brought in as a pinch runner. Williams then scored as Sarah Grace Smith (Crystal Springs) reached on an error cutting the lead down to 6-4.

The Lady Wolves then looked to score in the top of the sixth inning as Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) reached on an error to start the inning. Later in the inning, Madison Moak (Brookhaven) hit a two-out single while Richardson drew a walk to load the bases, but a groundout ended the inning with the Lady Wolves still trailing the Lady Eagles, 6-4.

After the Lady Wolves held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the bottom half of the sixth inning, they completed the comeback with a four-run top of the seventh as Efferson hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Smith then smashed a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run to tie the game at 6-6. Laney Waguespack (Bayou Gauche, LA) was then brought in as a pinch hitter and delivered a single to keep the inning going with no outs while Warren then drew a walk to put two runners on. Both Waguespack and Warren advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Madere and then Banes delivered the go-ahead hit with a two-RBI single scoring both and giving the Lady Wolves an 8-6 lead.

The Lady Eagles drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh but a flyout ended the inning and securing the game one victory for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team with Madison Moak and Kinley Ainsworth (Brandon) getting two hits apiece while AG Richardson, Taylor Efferson, Sarah Grace Smith, Laney Waguespack, Emeri Warren, Kynlee Madere, and Olivia Banes having one hit each. Richardson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Smith and Banes had two RBIs each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) got the start for the Lady Wolves and picked up a no-decision while pitching three innings and allowing five runs, all earned, on three hits with seven walks and four strikeouts. Karley Rouse (D'Iberville) pitched one inning of relief allowing one unearned run on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts. Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) picked up the win in relief and improved to 3-0 overall while pitching three innings of scoreless relief with two hits, two walks, and one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day got off to a vastly different start as the Lady Wolves plated five runs to jump out in front of the Lady Eagles with Madison Moak hitting a leadoff double while Abby Grace Richardson was hit-by-pitch to put two runners on.

Later in the inning, Taylor Efferson crushed a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a three-run home run to give the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead. Sarah Grace Smith then drew a walk to continue the inning. Emeri Warren then followed with a single while an error on the play allowed Smith to score and Warren advanced to third on the play. While Warren then scored on an RBI single by Kynlee Madere making the score, 5-0.

The Lady Eagles then used a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the first to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 5-2 while a third solo home run in the bottom of the third made the score, 5-3. The Lady Wolves then scored two runs in the top of the fourth as Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) reached on an error to start the inning.

Olivia Banes then drew a walk while Moak hit a bunt single to load the bases with no outs for the Lady Wolves. Richardson then drew a walk scoring Phillips while Banes scored on a fielder's choice by Kinley Ainsworth increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 7-3.

The Lady Wolves then scored four runs in the top of the fifth as Madere and Phillips hit back-to-back singles with one out to get the offense going. After both runners advanced on a groundout, Moak hit a two-out, two-RBI triple scoring Madere and Phillips. Richardson then smashed a 2-0 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run to increase the lead to 11-3.

The Lady Wolves then retired the Lady Eagles in order to secure the 11-3 game two win and sweep of the doubleheader.

The Lady Wolves totaled ten hits as a team with Madison Moak leading the way with three hits while Emeri Warren and Kynlee Madere had two hits apiece with AG Richardson, Taylor Efferson, and Leia Phillips adding one hit each. Richardson and Efferson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three apiece while Moak had two RBIs with Kinley Ainsworth and Kynlee Madere having one RBI each.

Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) got the start for the Lady Wolves and picked up a no decision while pitching two innings and allowing two runs, both earned on three hits with one walk. Emily Richarde got her second win of the day in relief improving to 4-0 overall while pitching three innings and allowing one earned run on one hit with two strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 29-3 overall, 16-1 in conference play, and will return to action on the road against Holmes on Saturday, April 13. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m., in Goodman.
