Lady Wolves Blast Lady Bears in Sweep

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team returned home for a conference play doubleheader against rival Southwest Mississippi. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Bears taking game one, 8-2, and then getting a 19-0 shutout win in game two.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning as Madison Moak (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff single to get the offense going while Abby Grace Richardson (Brookhaven) followed by drawing a walk.

Moak was then forced out as Zykeria Cole (Magee) reached on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, Richardson scored on a two-out RBI single by Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) while Cole then scored on an RBI double by Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) to give the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead. The Lady Wolves then added one run in the bottom of the second as Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) and Moak hit back-to-back one-out singles to get the offense started. Hughey was then forced out as Richardson reached on a fielder's choice while Moak then scored on a two-out RBI single by Cole increasing the lead to 3-0.

The Lady Bears then scored their first run of the game with a solo home run in the top of the fifth to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 3-1. However, the Lady Wolves responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning as Warren and Leia Phillips (Philadelphia) hit back-to-back singles with one out to get the offense going. Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) then singled, but Phillips was called out on the play for the second out of the inning. Hughey then reached on a fielder's choice as all runners were safe on the play to load the bases. Warren and Banes then scored on a two-out, two-RBI single by Moak increasing the lead to 5-1. Richardson then stepped up and smashed an 1-0 pitch over the fence in centerfield for a three-run home run while setting a new Co-Lin record for career RBIs at 129 and giving the Lady Wolves an 8-1 lead.

The Lady Bears then started the top of the seventh with a hit-by-pitch as back-to-back groundouts and an RBI single cut the lead down to 8-2. After a second-straight single, the Lady Wolves forced a pop out to end the game and secure the 8-2 victory.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as Madison Moak and Emeri Warren had three hits apiece while AG Richardson, Zykeria Cole, Taylor Efferson, Leia Phillips, and Olivia Banes had one hit each. Richardson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Moak had two with Cole, Efferson, and Warren adding one RBI each.

Cara Biswell pitched a complete game to improve to 13-3 with the win while allowing two runs, both earned, on three hits with six strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader got off to a fast-scoring start for the Lady Wolves as Madison Moak crushed a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a leadoff solo home run making the score, 1-0. AG Richardson then followed by drawing a walk while Zykeria Cole then put two runs on the board as she blasted a 2-0 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home one. Later in the inning, Taylor Efferson took one swing of the bat on an 1-2 pitch and smashed a solo home run over the centerfield fence giving the Lady Wolves a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then increased their lead with five runs in the second inning as Olivia Banes hit a leadoff single while Carson Hughey reached on an error. The runners then advanced on a groundout by Moak while Banes then scored on an RBI single by Richardson. After Hughey scored on an RBI single by Cole, Richardson was forced out as Kinley Ainsworth (Brandon) reached on a fielder's choice. Efferson then stepped up and demolished a 2-2 pitch off the scoreboard for a three-run home run, her second of the game in as many at-bats, to increase the Lady Wolves lead to 9-0.

The Lady Wolves biggest inning of the doubleheader then came in the bottom of the third as they plated six runs with Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) hitting a leadoff double to get the offense going. After Banes drew a walk, both runners advanced on a groundout by Laney Waguespack (Bayou Gauche, LA) and then Goodson and Banes scored on a two-RBI double by Emma Kate Fimiano (Petal) increasing the lead to 11-0. Avery Williams (Lewisburg) followd with a single while Fimiano then scored on an RBI single by Sarah Grace Smith (Crystal Springs). After Maddie Bruner (Brandon) drew a walk to load the bases, Williams scored on a fielder's choice by Efferson as Bruner was forced out on the play making the score 13-0. Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) then drew a walk to load the bases while back-to-back walks for Goodson and Banes scored Smith and Efferson respectively increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 15-0.

The Lady Wolves then added four runs in the bottom of the fourth as Williams hit a one-out double to start the offense. Smith then hit a second-straight double scoring Williams while Bruner followed with a single to put two runners on with one out. Smith then scored on an RBI single by Karley Rouse (D'Iberville) making the score, 17-0. Later in the inning, Bruner and Rouse scored on a two-out, two-RBI single by Goodson increasing the lead to 19-0.

The Lady Bears then loaded the bases with a walk and back-to-back singles in the top of the fifth, but a double play ended the inning to secure the 19-0 game two shutout victory and sweep for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 16 hits as Zykeria Cole, Taylor Efferson, Avery Williams, Sarah Grace Smith, and Bailee Goodson had two hits apiece while Madison Moak, Emma Kate Fimiano, AG Richardson, Maddie Bruner, Karley Rouse, and Olivia Banes had one hit each. Efferson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with five while Cole and Goodson had three RBIs each, Fimiano and Smith had two RBIs each, with Moak, Richardson, Rouse, and Banes adding one RBI each.

Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) got the start and improved to 6-0 overall while pitching three scoreless and hitless innings with three strikeouts. Karley Rouse pitched an inning of scoreless and hitless relief with one walk and one strikeout while Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) pitched an inning of scoreless relief allowing two hits and one walk.

Co-Lin improves to 33-3 overall, 20-1 in conference play, and will return to action for their final regular season home game on Saturday, April 20 hosting East Mississippi. First pitch between the Lady Lions and the Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Lady Wolves Field in Wesson. The Lady Wolves will also celebrate Sophomore Day during the game and will honor and recognize the sophomore members of the team.
