Lady Wolves Sweep Ranked Doubleheader

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team returned home for a doubleheader against Lansing on Monday, March 3. The No. 8 Lady Wolves swept the No. 24 Stars taking game one, 7-3, and game two, 10-1.

GAME ONE

The Stars got on the board first as they plated one run in the top of the first to hold an early 1-0 lead over the Lady Wolves. The Lady Wolves responded by taking the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as Morgan Chisolm (Madison) reached on an error with one out. Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) then followed with a single as Chisolm took third on the play while Warren advanced to second. Chisolm then scored on a sacrifice fly by Emma Kate Fimiano (Petal) while a two-out, RBI-double by Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) scored Warren to give the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead.

The Stars then took advantage of a two-out, two-RBI single in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead over the Lady Wolves. However, the Lady Wolves responded by tying the game with a single run in the bottom half of the inning as Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) hit a leadoff single to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Banes stole second and then scored on a two-out, RBI-single by Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) making the score, 3-3.

The game remained tied until the Lady Wolves scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth as Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) drew a leadoff walk to get the offense started and then stole second. Later in the inning, Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) scored Phillips with a one-out, RBI-double while Efferson then scored on an RBI-single by Avery Williams (Olive Branch) and took second on the play making the score, 5-3. Williams then advanced to third on a single by Madere. After Madere stole second, Williams scored on an RBI-single by Addison Lindley (Madison) while an error on the play scored Madere to give the Lady Wolves a 7-3 lead.

The Stars then got one baserunner over the final two innings as the Lady Wolves secured the 7-3 victory.

The Lady Wolves totaled nine hits with Kynlee Madere and Emeri Warren having two hits apiece while Olivia Banes, Taylor Efferson, Avery Williams, Addison Lindley, and Carson Hughey had one hit each. Efferson, Williams, Lindley, Hughey, and Emma Kate Fimiano had one RBI each for the Lady Wolves.

Emma Kate Fimiano got the start and earned a no-decision while pitching two innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits with one strikeout. Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) picked up the win in relief (4-0) while pitching five innings and allowing one earned run on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lady Wolves got off to a fast scoring start as they took the lead with one run in the bottom of the first. Olivia Banes hit a one-out single and then scored on an RBI single by Taylor Efferson to give the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then extended their lead with four runs in the bottom of the second as Stella Roberts (Raymond) stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed a 2-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for a leadoff solo home run to extend the lead to 2-0. Abby Burnette (Brookhaven) followed with a single and then advanced to second on a groundout by Carson Hughey. Burnette took third as Brelie Phillips reached on an error and then scored on an RBI groundout by Banes making the score, 3-0. Efferson then stepped up and smashed the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a two-run home run making the score, 5-0.

The Stars then took advantage of an error by the Lady Wolves to score their lone run in the top of the third making the score, 5-1. However, the Lady Wolves responded with their second straight four-run inning in the bottom half as Emeri Warren and Roberts drew back-to-back walks to put two runners on with one out. After the Lady Wolves pulled a double steal, Burnette delivered a two-RBI single scoring Warren and Roberts while increasing the lead to 7-1. Later in the inning, Burnette scored on a two-out, RBI-double by Phillips who then scored on an RBI single by Banes giving the Lady Wolves a 9-1 lead.

The Lady Wolves added their final run in the bottom of the fourth as Noelle Laiche (Gonzales, LA) reached base on an error, advanced to second as Roberts drew a walk, and then scored on an RBI single by Burnette making the score, 10-1. The Stars then got a one-out double in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Wolves sealed the victory and sweep with a strikeout followed by a lineout.

The Lady Wolves totaled ten hits as Abby Burnette went a perfect 3-for-3 during the game while Olivia Banes and Taylor Efferson had two hits apiece with Brelie Phillips, Kynlee Madere, and Stella Roberts adding one hit each. Burnette and Efferson led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three each while Banes had two RBIs with Phillips and Roberts adding one RBI each.

Taylor Efferson got the start and improved to 4-1 overall while pitching four innings allowing one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts. Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) pitched one inning of relief with one hit and one strikeout.

Co-Lin improves to 11-3 overall and will return to action for their second ranked matchup of the week as they host Kankakee on Thursday, March 5. First pitch between the No. 20 Lady Cavaliers and the No. 8 Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m.
