Lady Wolves Sweep Second Straight Ranked Doubleheader

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team wrapped up their non-conference play of the regular season by hosting Kankakee on Thursday, March 6. The No. 8 Lady Wolves swept the No. 20 Lady Cavaliers taking game one, 10-0 in five innings, and game two, 9-3.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves jumped ahead of the Lady Cavaliers as they started the scoring early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first with Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) hitting a leadoff single while Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) reached on an error to put two runners on with no outs. Phillips advanced to third after tagging up on a flyout and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Avery Williams (Olive Branch) after Banes stole second. Banes then scored on a two-out, RBI-single by Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) making the score, 2-0.

The Lady Wolves added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as Morgan Chisolm (Madison) hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Abby Burnette (Brookhaven) increasing the lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, Phillips hit a two-out double to extend the inning, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on an RBI-single by Banes making the lead 4-0.

The Lady Wolves then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Williams hit a leadoff single and then stole second. Later in the inning, Williams scored as Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) reached on an error and advanced to third on a second error on the player. Warren then scored on a dropped third strike play making the score, 6-0.

The final four runs of the inning came in the bottom of the fourth as Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Banes then stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed a 0-2 pitch over the fence in left centerfield for a three-run home run increasing the lead to 9-0. Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) then reached on an error while Williams hit a single while Efferson advanced to third on the play. Madere then hit an RBI-single scoring Efferson making the score, 10-0.

The Lady Cavaliers then drew a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Wolves got a double play followed by a lineout to secure the 10-0 victory.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as Brelie Phillips went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Olivia Banes, Avery Williams, and Kynlee Madere had two hits apiece with Morgan Chisolm and Carson Hughey adding one hit each. Banes led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with four while Madere had two with Williams, Chisolm, and Abby Burnette adding one RBI each.

Taylor Efferson got the start and improved to 5-1 overall while pitching four innings and allowing two hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) pitched one inning of relief with one walk.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader saw the Lady Cavaliers score first as a leadoff walk followed by an error led to a three-run home run to give them an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. However, the Lady Wolves wasted no time with a response as they scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Brelie Phillips led off the inning by drawing a walk. Phillips later stole second and advanced to third on a groundout by Taylor Efferson. Avery Williams then stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and smashed a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run cutting the lead down to 3-2. The game stayed at that margin until the Lady Wolves scored two in the bottom of the third to take the lead as Olivia Banes hit a one-out single to get the offense going while Efferson then drew a walk to put two runners on. Later in the inning, both runners advanced on a passed ball while a second passed ball scored Banes. Efferson then scored on a two-out, RBI-double by Kynlee Madere to give the Lady Wolves a 4-3 lead.

The Lady Wolves added three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Emeri Warren hit a leadoff double to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Warren advanced to third on a single by Carson Hughey. Phillips then stepped up, took one swing of the bat and demolished a 1-1 pitch into the Lady Wolves bullpen in left field for a three-run home run making the lead, 7-3.

The Lady Wolves added their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Stella Roberts (Raymond) hit a one-out single to get the offense started. Roberts then stole second and scored on an RBI-double by Warren. Warren then scored on an RBI-double by Emilie Williams (Summit) increasing the lead to 9-3.

The Lady Wolves then retired the Lady Cavaliers in order in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to secure the 9-3 victory and sweep of the doubleheader.

The Lady Wolves totaled ten hits as Emeri Warren had the only multi-hit game with two hits while Brelie Phillips, Olivia Banes, Avery Williams, Keegan McCorkle, Kynlee Madere, Stella Roberts, Emilie Williams, and Carson Hughey had one hit each. Phillips led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three, while Avery Williams had two, with Madere, Warren, and Emilie Williams had one RBI each.

Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) got the start and improved to 5-0 with the complete game win while allowing three runs, two earned, on one hit with two walks and six strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 13-3 overall and will return to action on the road as they open MACCC play against Meridian on Saturday, March 8. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Eagles is set for 1 p.m., in Meridian.
