Lady Wolves Sweep Fifth Straight Conference Doubleheader

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team resumed MACCC play by hosting Northwest on Saturday, March 22 in a Top 10 matchup. The No. 7 Lady Wolves swept the No. 9 Rangers taking game one, 7-3, and game two, 2-1.

GAME ONE

The Lady Wolves took an early lead over the Rangers as they scored one run in the bottom of the first as Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) hit a one-out single to get the offense started. Banes then stole second and stole third while an error on the play allowed Banes to score and give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then increased their lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth as Avery Williams (Olive Branch) hit a two-out single to get things started. After Williams stole second, Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) then drew a walk to put two runners on for the Lady Wolves. Williams then scored on an RBI-single by Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) to extend the lead to 2-0 while an error on the play allowed both runners to advance. A pop out then brought the inning to an end stranding two runners in scoring position.

The Lady Rangers then tied the game with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth making the score, 2-2. However, the Lady Wolves wasted no time in responding as they plated two runs to retake the lead with Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) hitting a two-out double to get the offense going. Phillips then scored on an RBI-double by Banes while a two-base error on the play allowed Banes to score and give the Wolves a 4-2 lead.

The Rangers then cut the lead down to one as they scored one run in the top of the sixth making the score, 4-3. Once again, the Lady Wolves responded as they scored three runs to extend the lead in the bottom half of the sixth with Warren drawing a walk with one-out to get the offense started. Morgan Chisolm (Madison) then doubled advancing Warren to third. Emilie Williams (Summit) then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Warren while Chisolm then scored as Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) reached on an error making the score, 6-3. Phillips then singled advancing Hughey to second and she then scored on an RBI-single by Banes increasing the lead to 7-3.

The Rangers then got a one-out walk in the top of the seventh, but a pop out followed by a flyout ended the game and secured the game one victory for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled nine hits as Olivia Banes led the way with three hits while Brelie Phillips had two with Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA), Avery Williams, Emeri Warren, and Morgan Chisolm had one hit each. Banes led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with two while Warren and Emilie Williams had one RBI each.

Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) improved to 8-0 with the complete game win while allowing three earned runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel as both starters kept the scoring chances to a minimum throughout much of the game. The Rangers looked to take the lead in the third inning as they got a leadoff single followed by a walk to put two runners on with no outs. However, the Lady Wolves then got a double play followed by a fly out to keep the game scoreless.

The Lady Wolves then had scoring chances in back-to-back innings as one-out doubles in the bottom of the third and fourth innings by Abby Burnette (Brookhaven) and Taylor Efferson put a runner in scoring position. However, both innings ended with the runner stranded as the game remained scoreless after four innings of play.

The Rangers then took the lead with a single run in the top of the fifth making the score, 1-0. That lead held until the Lady Wolves scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Carson Hughey hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Later in the inning, Olivia Banes hit a single to put two runners on with one out. After both runners advanced on a lineout, Avery Williams delivered a two-out, two-RBI double scoring Hughey and Banes and giving the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead.

The Rangers were then retired in order on three groundouts to secure the game two victory and sweep for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled five hits in the game as Olivia Banes, Taylor Efferson, Avery Williams, Abby Burnette, and Carson Hughey had one hit each. Williams had two RBIs for the Lady Wolves.

Taylor Efferson improved to 8-1 overall with the complete game win allowing one earned run on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 23-3 overall, 10-0 in MACCC play, and will return to action hosting Gulf Coast on Tuesday, March 25. First pitch between in the Top 20 matchup between the No. 18 Bulldogs and the No. 7 Lady Wolves is set for 4 p.m., in Wesson.
