Lady Wolves Sweep Seventh Straight Conference Doubleheader

FULTON – The Co-Lin Softball team took to the road to face off against Itawamba in a Top 25 MACCC doubleheader on Friday, March 28. The No. 4 Lady Wolves swept the No. 21 Indians taking game one in extra innings, 2-1, in ten innings and then won game two, 10-0.

GAME ONE

The first game of the doubleheader was pitcher's duel for most of the game as the Lady Wolves got on the board first in the top of the second. Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) got the offense going with a one-out triple and then scored on an RBI groundout by Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) making the score, 1-0.

The Indians then took advantage of a one-out walk and a two-out RBI-single in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1.

The game then saw neither team get more than one runner on base nor any scoring chances until the bottom of the sixth when the Indians got two runners in scoring position with one out. However, the Lady Wolves responded by getting a strikeout and a pop out to keep the game tied going to the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Wolves got the go-ahead run to third base with two outs, but a lineout left the runner stranded. The Indians then got the winning run to second base with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning and sent the game into extra innings.

After neither team scored a run in the eighth or ninth innings, international tiebreaker rules allowing each team to start their half inning with the last out from the previous inning as a runner at second base. For the Lady Wolves that runner was Abby Burnette (Brookhaven) who advanced to third as Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) reached base on an error. Burnette then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) to give the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh the Indians were retired in order going lineout, pop out, strikeout as the Lady Wolves secured the 2-1 game one victory.

The Lady Wolves totaled five hits as Carson Hughey led the way with two hits while Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) and Morgan Chisolm (Madison) had one hit each. Phillips and Emeri Warren had one RBI each for the Lady Wolves.

Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) improved to 10-0 with the complete game win allowing one earned run on three hits with eight walks and nine strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Lady Wolves got their scoring started in the second game with a pair of runs in the top of the second as Emeri Warren reached base on an error and then advanced to third on a double by Emilie Williams (Summit). Both then scored on a two-RBI single by Stella Roberts (Raymond) giving the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then increased their lead in the top of the third as Avery Williams (Olive Branch) came to the plate with two outs, took one swing of the bat, and smashed a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run, her third of the season, to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Lady Wolves then added two runs in the top of the fourth as Emilie Williams and Roberts reached base on back-to-back errors. After both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Carson Hughey, Brelie Phillips drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) then hit an RBI-single scoring Emilie Williams while Roberts scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Efferson increasing the lead to 5-0.

The Lady Wolves then exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth as Kynlee Madere and Warren drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Later in the inning, Roberts hit a one-out, RBI-double scoring Madere to increase the lead to 6-0. Hughey then drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Phillips then hit a two-RBI double scoring Warren and Roberts while Hughey was out at third on the play. Addison Lindley (Madison) then stepped up for a pinch-hit appearance, took one swing of the bat, and crushed a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field for a two-run home run, her first of her career, to give the Lady Wolves a 10-0 lead.

The Indians then got a one-out walk and single to put two runners on; however, the Lady Wolves then got a fly out followed by a strikeout to secure the game two victory and sweep.

The Lady Wolves totaled 11 hits as Taylor Efferson led the way with three hits while Stella Roberts had two hits with Brelie Phillips, Olivia Banes, Addison Lindley, Avery Williams, Kynlee Madere, and Emilie Williams had one hit each. Roberts led the Lady Wolves in RbIs with three, while Phillips and Lindley had two RBIs apiece with Banes, Efferson, and Avery Williams have one RBI each.

Taylor Efferson got the start and improved to 10-1 overall while pitching four hitless and scoreless innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) pitched one inning of relief with one hit, one walk, and one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 27-3 overall, 14-0 in MACCC play, and will return to action hosting Jones on Wednesday, April 2. The Top 5 matchup between the No. 3 Bobcats and the No. 4 Lady Wolves is set to start at 4 p.m., in Wesson.
