WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team returned home to host a Top-5 MACCC matchup against Jones on Wednesday, April 2. The No. 4 Lady Wolves and No. 3 Bobcats with the Lady Wolves taking game one, 6-2, while the Bobcats took game two, 5-4.
GAME ONE
The Lady Wolves took an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) and Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Later in the inning, Avery Williams (Olive Branch) to load the bases with one out. Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) then hit an RBI-single scoring Phillips while Banes then scored on a sacrifice fly by Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) to give the Lady Wolves a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Wolves extended their lead in the bottom of the third as Avery Williams stepped up to the plate with two outs, took one swing of the bat, and crushed the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a solo home run, her fourth of the season, to make the lead, 3-0.
That lead held for the Lady Wolves until the Bobcats hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead down to 3-2. However, the Lady Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom half as Warren drew a leadoff walk. After Noelle Laiche (Gonzales, LA) was brought in as a pinch runner, Morgan Chisolm (Madison) reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt allowing both runners to advance into scoring position. Later in the inning, Carson Hughey hit a one-out, two-RBI double scoring Laiche and Chisolm while Phillips followed up by drawing a walk to put two runners on with two outs. Later in the inning, Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) hit a two-out, RBI-single scoring Hughey and making the lead, 6-2.
The Bobcats then drew a two-out walk in the top of the seventh, but the inning was ended with a pop out securing the game one victory for the Lady Wolves.
The Lady Wolves totaled five hits as Brelie Phillips, Taylor Efferson, Avery Williams, Kynlee Madere, and Carson Hughey had one hit each. Hughey led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with two while Efferson, Madere, Avery Williams, and Emeri Warren had one RBI each.
Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) moved to 11-0 on the season with the complete game win while allowing two earned runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The second game of the day was a scoreless affair through the first three innings until the Bobcats broke through with a single run in the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Lady Wolves exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the inning as Emilie Williams (Summit) hit a one-out single to get the offense started. Stella Roberts (Raymond) then stepped up, took one swing of the bat, and smashed a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left field for a two-run home run, her second of the season, to give the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead. Carson Hughey then followed with a double and later in the inning, scored on a two-out, RBI-double by Olivia Banes. Taylor Efferson then drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs while Banes then scored on an RBI-single by Avery Williams to increase the lead to 4-1. Kynlee Madere then drew a walk to load the bases, but the Lady Wolves left the bases loaded after a fielder's choice ended the inning.
The Lady Wolves then looked to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Emilie Williams hit a leadoff single but was forced out as Roberts reached on a fielder's choice. After Roberts advanced to third on a single by Hughey, a lineout double play brought the inning to a close with the score still 4-1.
The Bobcats then scored four runs in the top of the sixth highlighted by a three-run home run to take a 5-4 lead. The Lady Wovles then looked to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh as Madere hit a leadoff single and then took second on a sacrifice bunt by Warren. After Emilie Williams was hit-by-pitch both runners advanced into scoring position after a flyout. The inning then ended on a lineout sealing the 5-4 win for the Bobcats and a split on the day.
The Lady Wolves totaled ten hits as Carson Hughey led the way with three hits while Emilie Williams and Avery Williams had two hits apiece with Olivia Banes, Kynlee Madere, and Stella Roberts had one hit each. Roberts led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with two while Banes and Avery Williams had one RBI each.
Taylor Efferson took the loss (10-2) with the complete game effort allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Co-Lin is now 28-4 overall, 15-1 in MACCC play, and will return to action hosting East Mississippi on Friday, April 4. First pitch between the Lady Lions and the Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m., while the Lady Wolves will celebrate Sophomore Day before the games and honor nine members of the team!
