Lady Wolves defeat Southwest in defensive matchup

SUMMIT – There was not much scoring in Summit Thursday night as the Lady Wolves outlasted the Lady Bears of Southwest 57-52 in a defensive contest. The win gives the Lady Wolves a 17-3 record on the year and 10-2 in the South Division. The Lady Wolves are in second place in the South Division behind Jones County. Co-Lin is back on the court Monday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. as Meridian travels to Wesson. The game will serve as sophomore night and Co-Lin's breast cancer awareness game so fans are asked to wear pink. "Early in the ballgame we were playing into their tempo," said head coach Gwyn Young. "They controlled the majority of the game, but we were lucky to make some plays late in the game and win by five."

Throughout the game both teams struggled to run their offensives effectively. The Lady Bears took control of the game midway through the first quarter as they built up a seven-point lead. Co-Lin fired back in the final minute of the quarter and cut the lead to just two as Tenazhia Hinkson scored in the paint, and followed it with a deep three at the buzzer.

The Lady Wolves came alive in the second quarter as they netted 21 points and took a six-point lead heading into the locker room.

In the third the Co-Lin lost the rhythm they had carried into the half as the Lady Bears fought back and tied the game at 41 apiece to end the quarter.

The final quarter of play saw back and forth action until the Lady Wolves took the lead for good with 6:03 remaining. Southwest went on a brief 5-0 run in the final minute of play, but the Lady Wolves were able to make key free throws late in the contest and secure the victory.

Hinkson led the Lady Wolves with 19 points and four assists. She also brought down six boards. Brittany Rose finished with 13 points and four rebounds, while Alexus Holt rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. Diamond Smith posted a team high 12 rebounds and had nine points.

Peyton Papenburg led Southwest with 12 points, while Keturah Bingham finished with 11. Both Alissa Adam and Shalisa Hawthorne added another 10 points each. Danyelle Lewis led the Lady Bears with six rebounds.

Co-Lin shot 36 percent (21-for-59) from the field, 30 percent (3-for-10) from three-point range, and 67 percent (12-of-18) from the free throw line. The Lady Wolves brought down 43 rebounds. Southwest shot 37 percent (19-for-51) from the field, 38 percent (8-for-21) from three-point range, and 60 percent (6-for-10) from the foul line. The Lady Bears posted 32 rebounds.
