Hinds upsets the Lady Wolves in Utica

UTICA – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves suffered a loss to Hinds on the road Thursday night as Co-Lin had its worst shooting performance of the year. The 78-61 loss moves the Lady Wolves to 15-3 on the year and 8-2 in the MACJC South Division. Co-Lin takes the court again Monday, Feb. 13 as Co-Lin host East Central. "They played really well, but our offense just didn't execute," said Young. "It looked like we had dead legs and couldn't move, it was a really physical game, but when you shoot 27% from the field you aren't going to have much of a chance to win"

The Lady Wolves took advantage of early free throws and leapt to a five-point in the opening four minutes of action Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs quickly responded and rattled off a 6-0 run to take a one-point lead with 4:40 remaining in the quarter.

Co-Lin could not find the rim late in the first quarter. Hinds seized the opportunity and went on a 12-1 run. The Lady Bulldogs maintained their 10-point lead for the entire second quarter as baskets were exchanged between the teams. At the half the Hinds led the Lady Wolves 40-30.

The Lady Wolves cut the Lady Bulldogs lead to just seven in the opening minutes of the second half after back-to-back baskets from Tenazhia Hinkson and Karry Callahan. After trading scores for several minutes, Hinds stretched their lead with a 9-3 run in the final three minutes. The Lady Bulldogs led 58-43 going into the fourth quarter.

Co-Lin made one final push in the fourth and narrowed the lead to just nine. The late effort was not enough as Hinds rallied and netted several three-pointers and three-point plays. The Lady Bulldogs performance in the final minutes pulled the game out of reach for Co-Lin.

Brittany Rose led the Lady Wolves in scoring with 17 points, while Hinkson added 14 points and eight rebounds. Debraia Bell netted eight points and grabbed eight rebounds. Diamond Smith finished with nine rebounds and four blocks for the Lady Wolves.

Octavia Barnes led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points and six rebounds, while Areleatha Gipson scored 12. Twila Hill rounded Hinds' top scorers with 11 points.

Co-Lin shot 27 percent (23-for-85) from the field, 21 percent (4-for-19) from three-point range, and 65 percent (11-of-17) from the free throw line. The Lady Wolves brought down 54 rebounds. Hinds shot 43 percent (28-for-65) from the field, 33 percent (3-for-9) from three-point range, and 73 percent (19-for-26) from the foul line. The Lady Bulldogs posted 51 rebounds.
