Lady Wolves move to 5-0 on the year

SUMMIT, Miss. – The Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College improved to 5-0 on the season after Co-Lin defeated Baton Rouge Community 67-46 on Tuesday at the Southwest Mississippi Tournament. The Lady Wolves also picked up a win after Southern University-Shreveport forfeited the contest originally scheduled for Monday.

"We shot the three ball really well today, but got careless once we got ahead…we just couldn't initiate our offense and we have to pass the ball better," said head coach Gwyn Young. "We have some room to improve, we're stilling working on who needs to come into the game off the bench in certain situations."

Co-Lin, like most games this season, opened the contest with an offensive run. The Lady Wolves led 7-0 after Alexus Holt netted a three-pointer and a jumper followed by a layup from Karry Callahan. The quick offensive slowed throughout the remainder of the opening quarter, but the Lady Wolves played lockdown defense and held the Lady Bears to just five points.

In the second quarter Co-Lin put the game nearly out of reach with continued defensive pressure and the Lady Wolves three-point shooting. Co-Lin led by as many as 21 in the second quarter and took a 17 point lead into the locker room.

The second was much like the first as the Lady Wolves continued to pour in baskets from the perimeter and get second chances under the basket. Co-Lin stretched the lead to a game high 27 points early in the fourth.

Sophomore Brittany Rose led Co-Lin in scoring with 13 points and four assists. The Lady Wolves only other double-digit scorer was Nakeisha Holcomb with 10 points. Holcomb also had six rebounds. Holt and Alexandria Patton had eight points each. Holt led the Lady Wolves with six assists in the game. Callahan had a great game as she posted seven points, 10 rebounds, and three steals. Diamond Smith also hauled in four rebounds had posted four blocks.

Rosa Reynard led Baton Rouge with 13 points, while Faith Williams netted 11 points and brought down a team high five rebounds.

Co-Lin shot 49 percent (27-for-55) from the field, 46 percent (10-for-22) from the three-point line, and 38 percent (3-for-8) from the foul stripe. The Lady Bears finished the night shooting 33 percent (18-for-54) from the field, 25 percent (1-for-4) from beyond the arc, and 53 percent (9-for-17) from the free throw line.

The Lady Wolves are back in action Saturday, November 18 at 2:00 p.m. as Co-Lin travels to New Orleans, La. to take on the Delgado Community College Lady Dolphins.
