Defense and rebounding lift Lady Wolves over Coahoma

WESSON, Miss. – The Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College struggled offensively Thursday night, but out rebounded the Lady Tigers of Coahoma Community College 75-39. The strong performance on the boards and the Lady Wolves' lockdown defense helped lift Co-Lin to a 72-34 blowout victory. The win moves the Lady Wolves to 8-0 on the year.

"I thought we a great job on the boards, and we had moments where we looked good offensively," said Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young. "I felt like we were in slow motion sometimes to tonight though…we are going to have to shoot the ball and execute a lot better. Jones is a really good team coming in Monday, we are going to have to really be ready to play."

The contest was tight in the opening quarter of play Coahoma pulled away to a 5-point lead before the Lady Wolves clawed back into the game late in the quarter. The Lady Wolves finished out the period on an 8-2 run and led 17-13 after one.

Co-Lin kept Coahoma at bay in the second quarter as that same offensive run stretched to 21-2. The Lady Wolves prevented the Lady Tigers from finding the basket in the first eight minutes of the second quarter, and after giving up just four points in the second quarter the Lady Wolves took a 29-17 lead into halftime.

In the third, the Lady Wolves found a bit more offensive rhythm and rattled in 26 points. The sudden offensive spark allowed Co-Lin to pull away to a 25-point, 55-30 lead going into the fourth.

In the final quarter, the Lady Wolves stepped up again and held Coahoma to yet another quarter of just four points. The stellar defense allowed the Lady Wolves to run away with a 72-34 win.

Karry Callahan, a sophomore from Vicksburg, Miss., led the Lady Wolves with 14 points and hauled in 10 rebounds. The double-double is Callahan's second on the season as she went for 11 points and 10 rebounds last Monday versus Mississippi Delta. Brittany Rose netted 12 points for the Lady Wolves off the bench, while T'Kyra Hicks scored eight. The Lady Wolves racked up the rebounds. Callahan and Kiara Bolton led Co-Lin with 10 apiece. Diamond Smith hauled in nine, Hicks and Alexandria Patton had eight, and Ciara Norwood grabbed six. Other notable stats were Norwood's and Alexus Holt's four steals each and Smith's two blocks.

Geneva Walker led the Lady Tigers with nine points, while Lameka President added another six. President also led Coahoma on the boards with eight rebounds.  

Co-Lin shot 30 percent (26-for-86) from the field, seven percent (1-for-14) from the three-point line, and 66 percent (19-for-29) from the foul stripe. The Lady Tigers finished the night shooting 21 percent (13-for-62) from the field, 18 percent (3-for-17) from beyond the arc, and 83 percent (5-for-6) from the free throw line.
