Lady Wolves defeat Meridian 88-69

WESSON, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves took care of business Thursday night as Co-Lin defeated the Meridian Community College Lady Eagles 88-69. The Lady Wolves are now 13-2 on the season and tied for the MACJC South Division at 4-2. The Lady Wolves travel to Poplarville on Monday, January 29th as Co-Lin faces Pearl River Community College. "We did a much better job in the second half with getting stops and rebounds," said head coach Gwyn Young. "We did better running our offense tonight too, especially compared to our game at Southwest…every win is important so we need to try to have to be ready for Monday night."

The Lady Wolves had a dominating opening quarter as Co-Lin scored 25 and held the Lady Eagles to just 12. Unfortunately that lead began to dwindle in the second quarter as Meridian got several stops on the defensive end of the floor. The Lady Eagles ended the half with a 5-0 run that cut Co-Lin's lead to six, 40-34, going into the locker rooms.

Co-Lin started the second half a little slow and allowed Meridian to creep back into the game. The Lady Eagles took their first, and only, lead of the game midway through the quarter, 47-46. Co-Lin held Meridian to just six more points in the third while netting 18 of their own. Going into the fourth the Lady Wolves led 64-53.

The fourth quarter was all Co-Lin as the Lady Wolves held of the Lady Eagles. Co-Lin finished the contest on a 13-2 run to secure the win.

Alexus Holt led the Lady Wolves 22 points, while Brittany Rose added 20 points of her own. Diamond Smith dominated the boards for the Lady Wolves as she hauled in 14 rebounds. Smith posted 10 points as well for the double-double, and the sophomore posted four blocks. Holt brought down five rebounds and led the team with seven assists.  

Shannon Tate led Meridian in several categories with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks. Qiayon Bailey also had good numbers as she scored 15 points and brought down four boards.

Co-Lin shot 45 percent (33-for-73) from the field, 37 percent (7-for-19) from the three-point line, and 65 percent (15-for-23) from the foul stripe. The Lady Eagles finished the night shooting 45 percent (25-for-56) from the field, 30 percent (3-for-10) from beyond the arc, and 76 percent (16-for-21) from the free throw line.
