Lady Wolves improve to 2-1 with win over Delta

MOORHEAD, Miss. - The Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College trailed by one, 18-17, after the first quarter, but outscored the Lady Trojans' 67 to 48 over the next three periods, to leave J.T. Hall Coliseum with an 84-66 victory. The win moves the Lady Wolves to 2-1 on the year and drops Delta to 1-2. Co-Lin will not play again until the Southwest Mississippi Classic next Monday, November 18 as the team faces Southern Shreveport at 1 p.m. on the campus of Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, Miss. The Lady Wolves return to Summit on Tuesday to face the Baton Rouge Community College Bears, also at 1 p.m. 

The first quarter of play was back-and-forth as the lead traded hands eight times with six different ties. Mississippi Delta took a one-point advantage into the second quarter, 18-17. The Lady Trojans rode that momentum for the first part of the second quarter as the team built a six-point, 25-19 lead, the largest of the game for Delta, with 7:11 remaining until half. The Lady Wolves responded with a 12-2 run led by Sha'Quandra Carter to pull the momentum from the home team and to take a four-point, 31-27 lead. The Lady Trojans eventually knotted the game again at 33-33, the eighth tie of the game, with just 2:31 remaining in the half, but Co-Lin capitalized on some late trips to the free-throw line to take a 41-37 lead into intermission. 

The Lady Wolves exploded out of the locker room in the second half and quickly built a commanding lead with big baskets from Morgan McCray, Darien Tubby, and some three-pointers from Chardonay Williams. At the end of the third quarter, Co-Lin led by nine, 61-52. That lead continued to grow in the fourth quarter as the Lady Wolves went on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth. The late offensive pressure allowed the Lady Wolves to run away with the 84-66 victory. 

Five Lady Wolves scored in double-digits, including a team-high 16 from TaMara Riley who went 9-for-10 from the free-throw stripe. Darien Tubby added 15 points, while Sha'Quandra Carter scored 14. Chardonay Williams and Camryn Davis rounded out the top scorers with 12 and 11 points respectively. Morgan McCray led the Lady Wolves rebounds with six boards off the bench, while Tubby and Davis' four assists were team-highs. Venita Williams led the Lady Trojans in scoring and rebounding with 14 points and eight rebounds. 

Co-Lin shot a blistering 55 percent (26-of-47) from the floor, 50 percent (6-of-12) from three-point range, and 74 percent (26-of-35) from the free-throw line. The Lady Trojans shot 39 percent (24-of-61) from the floor, 22 percent (2-of-9) from downtown, and 52 percent (14-of-27) from the stripe. Co-Lin outrebounded the Lady Trojans 34 to 33.
