Lady Wolves defeat Delta, 64-56

WESSON, Miss. - In their first home game since the season opener, the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves defeated the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans 64-54 after big second and fourth quarter performances. The win moves the Lady Wolves to 5-1 on the season going into their first MACJC South Division contest next Monday, December 9 versus Pearl River Community College. The matchup is in Mullen Gymnasium on Co-Lin's Wesson campus. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. and fans that cannot attend can watch the action live at colinathletics.com/watch or listen live at WMJU 104.3 FM in Brookhaven.

"I'm glad we got away with a win, but we have to get better, our rebounding really got us over the hump tonight," said Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young. "We haven't shot that well this year, we are definitely capable we just have to get our game legs under us. Pearl River is a good team that has a lot of returning players that can shoot the three extremely well, we definitely have our work cut out for us."

The opening minutes of the contest was a defensive battle as the teams combined for just 10 points through the six minutes. At the end of one, the Lady Wolves led 12-8. Mississippi Delta fought back early in the second period and knotted the game at 13-13, just the second tie of the game. A pair of Darien Tubby free throws put Co-Lin back on top and the Lady Wolves did not relinquish that lead for the remainder of the contest. Late in the second a quarter a big three-pointer from Sha'Quandra Carter and a layup from Camryn Davis grew the lead to eight, 45-37, but after a late Delta free throw, the Lady Wolves took a seven-point, 45-38, lead into the locker room.

Co-Lin came out of the locker room on fire and quickly grew the lead to double digits. The 12-3 run saw big baskets from TaMara Riley and solid free throw shooting from Tubby and Carter and put the Lady Wolves on top 57-41. The Lady Trojans chipped back for the remainder of the contest, but the lead that the Lady Wolves had built was too much to overcome.

TaMara Riley led the Lady Wolves in scoring with 17 points, while Sha'Quandra Carter's 13 points and 11 rebounds gave the sophomore her third straight double-double. Dashell Davis came off the bench and led the team in rebounds with 15 and added nine points of her own, while Camryn Davis finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Venita Williams led Delta with 17 points, while Jacambriyona Cheatam led the Lady Trojans with seven rebounds.

The Lady Wolves shot 38 percent (24-of-63) from the floor, 27 percent (3-of-11) from three-point range, and 57 percent (13-of-23) from the free-throw line. The Lady Trojans shot 30 percent (20-of-67) from the floor, 40 percent (4-of-10) from downtown, and 67 percent (12-of-18) from the stripe. Co-Lin dominated the boards with 61 rebounds to Delta's 37.
