Hinds stuns Co-Lin in overtime victory

UTICA, Miss. - The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves led by nine points midway through the first quarter, but it was not enough as the Hinds Lady Bulldogs battled back and tied the game at the end of regulation. In the extra frame, the Lady Bulldogs cut a four-point Co-Lin lead down and secured a 75-71 upset victory. The loss drops the Lady Wolves to 12-9, 6-6 on the season and puts Co-Lin in a tied for fourth place in the MACJC South Division with Pearl River. Hinds improves to 3-16, 1-11. The Lady Wolves travel to Meridian on Monday, February 17 to face the Lady Eagles at 5:30 p.m. and wrap up the season with a home matchup versus Jones College on Thursday, February 20. The Lady Wolves started the contest with strong offensive play as an 11-3 run through the first quarter put the team on top, 18-9. The run was the result of impressive baskets from Sha'Quandra Carter, Darien Tubby, Dashell Davis, and a big three-pointer from Orlandrea McGee. Co-Lin outscored Hinds 20-15 in the first quarter. 

Hinds came to life in the second quarter as the Lady Bulldogs capitalized on Co-Lin turnovers and fired off an 11-0 run that put them in the lead by five, 26-21. That lead eventually grew to nine, 34-25, late in the second quarter, but with impressive play from TaMara Riley and strong free-throw shooting from Orieon James the Lady Wolves closed out the half with a 10-0 run to take a one-point, 35-34, lead into the locker room. 

In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs' Amaz Carmichael led the team as the 6'-3 post player began controlling the game under the basket. Hinds built a five-point lead early in the second half and attempted to hang on. Camryn Davis led the Lady Wolves in a ferocious comeback in the final minutes of regulation with back-to-back layups off turnovers. The teams traded baskets over the final minutes of the game with Carter knotting the game at 63-all with just eight seconds remaining. The Lady Wolves played lock-down defense on the other end to prevent a game-winning basket and forced overtime for the second time this season. 

Riley scored twice in the opening seconds of overtime to put Co-Lin up by four, 68-64, but a Hinds basket from Carmichael and solid free-throw shooting down the stretch from McKinley Ware and Shaniyah Meneweather put the Lady Bulldogs up by four, 75-71. 

Riley led the Lady Wolves with 16 points on the night, while Carter posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tubby finished with 12 points and a team-high eight assists, while Camryn Davis rounded out the top scorers with 10 points. 

Meneweather led Hinds with 22 points, while Carmichael posted a triple-double with 21 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 blocks. McKinley finished with 14, and Andrika Carter came off the bench to post a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double for Hinds. 

The Lady Wolves shot 39 percent (28-of-71) from the floor, 13 percent (2-of-15) from three-point range, and 65 percent (13-of-20) from the free-throw line. The Lady Bulldogs shot 45 percent (25-of-56) from the floor, 33 percent (2-of-6) from downtown, and 72 percent (23-of-32) from the stripe. Hinds outrebounded Co-Lin 46 to 36.
