Lady Wolves Drop Conference Opener

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team opened conference play with a contest against Southwest Mississippi on Thursday, December 2. The Lady Bears beat the Lady Wolves by a final of 60-54.

The Lady Wolves got off to a fast start leading for the majority of the first quarter. The Lady Bears grabbed a late lead in the quarter; however, the Lady Wolves gained a two-point advantage with one minute left and held on to take a 14-12 lead at the end of the quarter. The second quarter saw the two teams trade baskets and leads throughout, but the Lady Bears earned an advantage late in the quarter and held on to it as they took a 31-30 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

The third quarter belonged to the Lady Wolves as the teams once again remained within two points of total scoring in the frame, 15-13. The Lady Wolves clawed their way back from a three-point deficit and took a two-point lead with less than one minute remaining. Both teams traded baskets in their final possessions of the quarter as the Lady Wolves held a 45-44 lead as the buzzer sounded. The fourth quarter belonged to the Lady Bears as they outscored the Lady Wolves, 16-9, and secured the 60-54 win.

A pair of guards led the Lady Wolves offensively as freshman Zykeria Anderson (Edwards) and sophomore Marvia Spann (Madison) had ten points apiece. Anderson also had a shared team lead in rebounds with six and added two steals, while Spann had three rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block. Sophomore guard Jakyra Young (Kosciusko) added nine points with freshman guard Tandria Minor (Brandon) adding eight points along with four rebounds, one assist, and a team leading five steals.

Sophomore forward Madelynn Webster (Pocahontas) added seven points and shared the team lead in rebounds with six. Freshman forward Kiersten Ball (Louisville) and sophomore forward Jakiylah Esco (Ridgeland) added four points each and freshman forward Christina James (Columbia) had two points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves are now 5-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play and will return to action with a home contest against Southern University-Shreveport on Friday, December 10. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., at Mullen Gymnasium.
