Lady Wolves Falter Late Against Lady Wildcats

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team played host to Pearl River in conference action on Monday, January 24. The Lady Wildcats beat the Lady Wolves, 63-57.

The first quarter saw the Lady Wolves dominate the Lady Wildcats as they jumped out to a 12-7 lead over the opening minutes. The Lady Wolves continued to run away from the Lady Wildcats closing out the quarter on an 8-2 scoring run and increased their lead to 20-9.

However, the second quarter saw the Lady Wildcats respond with a 13-6 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 26-22 with just over five minutes left in the quarter. The Lady Wildcats ended the first half with a 12-6 scoring run capped off by a three-point basket with five seconds left in the half to take a 34-32 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

The third quarter saw the teams trade baskets as the game was tied twice in the first few minutes culminating in a 36-36 tie with just over seven minutes remaining in the quarter. The Lady Wildcats then went on a 13-4 scoring run to grab a 49-40 lead with close to three minutes left in the third quarter. The Lady Wolves cut the lead down to seven, 51-44, with a 5-2 scoring run to close out the quarter.

The Lady Wolves used that momentum to open the fourth quarter and cut the Lady Wildcats lead down to 54-50 with four minutes left to play. However, the Lady Wildcats would not allow the Lady Wolves to get within the four-point margin down the stretch earning the hard-fought 63-57 win.

Sophomore guard Aniya Sanders (Vicksburg) led the Lady Wolves with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds while also accounting for three assists, two steals, and one block. Freshman guard Zykeria Anderson (Edwards) added 13 points and two steals while sophomore forward Jakiylah Esco (Ridgeland) with three rebounds and one assist.

Sophomore guards Jakyra Young (Kosciusko) and Marvia Spann (Madison) had eight and three points respectively. Spann also led the team in assists with six. Freshman forward Kiersten Ball (Louisville) and Madelynn Webster (Pocahontas) added two points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin is now 8-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play and will return to action with a road contest against Coahoma on Thursday, January 27. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
