Lady Wolves Outlast Lady Indians for Fourth Straight Win

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team played host to Itawamba on Monday, January 7. The Lady Wolves held off a come-from-behind effort by the Lady Indians to earn a 65-60 win.

The Lady Wolves used the opening minutes of the first quarter to go on a 10-2 scoring run and led by that margin with five minutes of play remaining. The Lady Wolves closed out the quarter with an 8-7 scoring run to take an 18-9 lead as the buzzer sounded. The second quarter started with a quick 5-0 scoring run by the Lady Indians to cut down the Lady Wolves lead to 18-13 with seven minutes remaining. However, the Lady Wolves responded with a 12-10 scoring run to increase the lead to 30-23 with two minutes of play left in the quarter and first half. The Lady Indians then ended the quarter outscoring the Lady Wolves by a 5-2 margin, but the Lady Wolves held a 32-28 advantage going into the locker rooms at halftime.

The Lady Wolves came out in the third quarter and went on an 8-2 scoring run to increase their lead to 40-30 with just over six minutes left in the quarter. The Lady Indians then responded with a 9-5 scoring run to cut down the Lady Wolves lead to 45-39 three minutes of play remaining. The Lady Wolves expanded the lead back to ten points as they closed out the quarter on a 6-2 scoring run making the score 51-41 as the horn sounded. The Lady Indians took the majority of the fourth quarter and whittled down the Lady Wolves lead as they score stood at 62-58 with one and a half minutes of play left outscoring the Lady Wolves by a 17-11 margin. However, the Wolves held on and closed out the 65-60 victory over the Lady Indians to earn their fourth consecutive win.

Sophomore guard Aniya Sanders (Vicksburg) and freshman guard (Zykeria Anderson) continued their double-digit scoring streaks as Sanders led all scorers with 23 points while Anderson added 13. Sanders also led the team in rebounds and assists with six and four respectively to go along with two steals while Anderson had three rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Anderson has now hit double-digit scoring in seven straight games and eight of the last nine while Sanders accomplished the feat for the fourth consecutive game and 10 out of the last 11 games played. The 23 points also ties a career high that Sanders hit in the Lady Wolves game against Holmes earlier this season on January 10.

Sophomore forward Madelynn Webster (Pocahontas) had nine points while freshman guard Tandria Minor (Brandon) and sophomore guard Jakyra Young (Kosciusko) added eight points each. Sophomore forward Jakiylah Esco (Ridgeland) had four points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin improves to 13-7 overall and 7-4 in conference play. The Lady Wolves return to action with a road contest against Meridian on Thursday, January 10. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m., at Graham Gymnasium.
