Lady Wolves Buzzer Beater Seals Win

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team played host to Gulf Coast on Monday, February 14. The Lady Wolves put an exclamation mark on Pink Night and Sophomore Night as they hit a game-winning buzzer beating three to beat the Lady Bulldogs, 72-71.

The Lady Bulldogs used the opening minutes of the first quarter to take a 6-3 lead over the Lady Wolves with five minutes of play remaining. The Lady Bulldogs then closed out the quarter with an 11-9 scoring run to hold a 17-12 lead. The Lady Wolves responded in the opening minutes of the second quarter with an 8-5 scoring run to cut the Lady Bulldogs lead down to 22-20 with six minutes left. The Lady Bulldogs responded with a 9-2 scoring run to increase their lead to 31-22 with just under three minutes remaining in the quarter and half. The Lady Wolves closed out the quarter with a 4-0 scoring run to cut the deficit down to 31-26 heading into the locker rooms at halftime.

The Lady Wolves opened the third quarter with a 9-4 scoring run to tie the game at 35-35 with just under six minutes of play remaining. The two teams then began trading baskets and one-point leads for the next few possessions, but the Lady Wolves were able to gain a 45-40 lead behind the strength of a 10-5 scoring run with two and a half minutes left in the quarter. The Lady Bulldogs stormed back and outscored the Lady Wolves 10-7 to close out the quarter; however, the Lady Wolves held a 52-50 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter began with two teams once again bringing the game to a tie at 56-56 with seven minutes of play left. The Lady Bulldogs then went on an 8-4 scoring run to hold a 64-60 advantage with two and a half minutes remaining. The Lady Wolves then outscored the Lady Bulldogs to cut the lead down to 70-67 with 23 seconds left. A made layup by sophomore guard Jakyra Young (Koscisuko) cut the lead down to 70-69 with 10 seconds left in the game. The Lady Bulldogs then went 1-for-2 at the free throw line and the Lady Wolves scrambled down the court to try and take the lead but missed the potential game-winning shot. However, the Lady Bulldogs were called for a travelling foul after the defensive rebound giving the Lady Wolves the ball with 0.7 on the clock. With the final play of the game, a pair of freshmen guards made the biggest play of the night as Tandria Minor (Brandon) inbounded the ball to Zykeria Anderson (Edwards) who banked in the game-winning three-point shot as the buzzer sounded to give the Lady Wolves a 72-71 win.

Zykeria Anderson led the way for the Lady Wolves as she led all scorers with 24 points to go along with two rebounds, one assist, and one steal. The 24 points are a Wolves career high for Anderson, who has now hit double-digit scoring marks in nine straight games and 10 of the last 11 games played. Sophomore guard Aniya Sanders (Vicksburg) also had a big impact on the game with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds along with one assist and one steal. Sophomore guard Marvia Spann (Madison) had nine points with five rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Tandria Minor had eight points with two rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Sophomore guard Jakyra Young had six points with six rebounds and three steals while freshman forward Christina James (Columbia) had three points with three rebounds. Freshman forward Kiersten Ball (Louisville) and sophomore forward Madelynn Webster (Pocahontas) had two points each.

Co-Lin is now 15-7 overall and 8-5 in conference play. The Lady Wolves will close out the 2022 regular season with a road contest against Northwest on Thursday, February 17. The Lady Wolves and Lady Rangers will tip-off in Howard Coliseum at 5:30 p.m.
