Lady Wolves Roll Past Lady Bears

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team returned to action playing host to Baton Rouge on Saturday, December 3. The Lady Wolves led wire-to-wire in a show of dominating force as they beat the Lady Bears, 77-55.

The Lady Wolves used a 13-3 scoring run over the opening minutes to take a lead at that margin with around five and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Lady Bears closed out the quarter with an 8-6 scoring run; however, the Lady Wolves held a 19-11 lead as the first quarter ended.

The Lady Wolves once again opened the second quarter with a strong scoring run over the Lady Bears, 8-2, to increase their lead to 27-13 with just under eight minutes remaining. The Lady Bears responded with a 10-6 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 33-23 with just under three and a half minutes of play left in the first half. The Lady Wolves then held the Lady Bears scoreless to close out the half while extending their lead to 36-23 as the teams entered the locker rooms for halftime.

The Lady Wolves flexed their muscles again in the opening minutes of the second half as they went on a 14-6 scoring run to increase their lead to 50-29 with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Lady Wolves closed out the quarter on a 9-7 scoring run to increase their lead to 59-36.

The Lady Bears outscored the Lady Wolves, 19-18, in the fourth quarter but that would not be enough for the Lady Bears as the Lady Wolves grew the lead to as large as 28 points in the quarter to secure the 77-55 victory as head coach Gwyn Young earned career victory number 996 at Co-Lin.

The Lady Wolves had all five starters reach double-digit scoring figures as freshman forward Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge, LA) led the team with her first career double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Zykeria Anderson (Edwards) had 15 points along with five rebounds, while leading the team in steals with three and shared the team lead in assists with five while sophomore guard Tandria Minor (Brandon) added 14 points, four rebounds, one steal, and shared the team lead in assists with five. Sophomore guard Leilani Lewis had 13 points with three rebounds, one assist, and one steal, while sophomore forward Kiersten Ball (Louisville) had 12 points with four rebounds.

Freshman guards Lashaunte Payne (Magee), Kayla Howard (Shaw), A'Shante Fleming (Canton), had two points each while freshman guard Kyja Willis (Brookhaven) had one point to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin improves to 8-1 overall and returns to action with a road game against Coastal Alabama-North on Wednesday, December 7. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Eagles is set for 5:30 p.m., in Monroeville, Alabama.
