Lady Wolves Come From Behind To Earn Conference Opening Win

SUMMIT – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team returned action with their conference opener on the road against Southwest Mississippi. The Lady Wolves used a come from behind effort in the second half to pull off a close victory over the Lady Bears, 69-67.

"We had a good first quarter and made shots by running our offense," stated Lady Wolves head coach Gwyn Young. "The second quarter we did not execute and they outscored us by a big margin to take the lead away."

The Lady Wolves jumped out to an early lead, 14-10, as the first quarter ended. However, the Lady Bears stormed back in the second half outscoring the Lady Wolves, 21-11, to take a 31-25 lead as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

A huge third quarter by the Lady Wolves saw them outscore the Lady Bears, 27-16 to take a 52-47 lead at the end of play. The Lady Bears outscored the Lady Wolves, 20-17, in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome the Lady Wolves lead as they secured the 69-67 victory.

"We had a very good third quarter and our execution led to the 11 point margin and we were able to hold on at the end to get the win," added Young.

The Lady Wolves had the three highest scorers during the game as sophomore guard Zykeria Anderson (Edwards) led the way with 24 points while also leading the team with eight assists and had the second-most rebounds with seven. Anderson has scored 12+ points in all 11 games played for the Lady Wolves this season. Sophomore forward Jamey McDaniel (Summit) had her best night as a member of the Lady Wolves with 17 points and led the team in rebounds with eight while sophomore guard Tandria Minor (Brandon) had 15 points with two rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore guard Ayanna McNairy (Brookhaven) had seven points, while sophomore guard Leilani Lewis (Baton Rouge, LA), freshman guard A'Shante Fleming (Canton), and freshman forward Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge, LA) had two points each to round out the scoring. Anderson, Minor, and Myers led the Lady Wolves in steals with three each.

"Zykeria with 24 while Tandria adding 15, and Jamey having her best game with us with 17 points all played big factors for our team tonight," said Young. "This was a good win on the road for us in our first conference game."

Co-Lin improves to 10-1 overall, 1-0 in conference play and head coach Gwyn Young earned career win number 998 while the team will return to action on Monday, January 9, with a road contest against Southern University-Shreveport. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and Lady Jaguars is scheduled for 6 p.m., in Shreveport.
