Lady Wolves Roll Past Lady Lions as Gwyn Young Gets Milestone Win

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team played host to East Mississippi in MACCC action on Thursday, January 12. The Lady Wolves overcame a slow first quarter to beat the Lady Lions, 74-62, as Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young earned career win number 1000.

The Lady Lions opened the game outscoring the Lady Wolves 10-8 to hold the lead at that margin with just under five minutes of play left in the first quarter. The Lady Lions finished the quarter with a 7-6 scoring run; however, the Lady Wolves had the game tying shot by sophomore guard Zykeria Anderson (Edwards) called off due to not beating the buzzer giving the Lady Lions a 17-14 lead.

The Lady Wolves responded with a strong second quarter as the opening minutes saw them outscore the Lady Lions 10-7 to tie the game at 24-24 with five minutes left. The teams then traded baskets, leads, and ties for the next few minutes, but the Lady Lions held a 29-28 lead with just over a minute left in the first half. However, the Lady Wolves scored four points in the final minute including a buzzer beating jump shot by sophomore guard Tandria Minor to take a 32-29 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter saw the Lady Lions open with an 11-8 scoring run to tie the game at 40-40 with just under six minutes of play remaining. The Lady Wolves closed out the quarter on a 10-4 scoring run to take a 50-44 lead at the end of the quarter.

The fourth quarter once again saw the Lady Lions fight back as they went on a 4-0 scoring run over the opening two minutes to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 50-49 with eight minutes of play remaining in the game. However, the Lady Lions would never tie the game back up as the Lady Wolves closed out the game with a 24-13 scoring run to secure the 74-62 victory.

Freshman forward Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge, LA) led the Lady Wolves with 21 points while adding nine rebounds while Zykeria Anderson had 19 points with three rebounds while leading the team in assists and steals with four and three respectively. Anderson has now scored 12+ points in all 13 games this season for the Lady Wolves.

Freshman guard A'Shante Fleming (Canton) had nine points, sophomore guard Tandria Minor (Brandon) had seven points while sophomore forward Jamey McDaniel (Summit) and freshman forward Kyla Farmer (Conehatta) had six points each with McDaniel leading the Lady Wolves in rebounds with 11. Sophomore guard Ayanna McNairy had four points and freshman guard Kayla Howard (Shaw) had two points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young earned his 1000th career win the victory and became just the third coach in NJCAA men's and women's basketball history to hit the milestone mark. Co-Lin is now 12-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play and will return to action with a road contest against Holmes on Tuesday, January 17. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m., in Goodman.
