Anderson’s Career Night Leads Lady Wolves to Win

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team resumed conference play hosting Northeast Mississippi on Thursday, January 26. The Lady Wolves trounced the Lady Tigers by a final of 75-57.

The Lady Tigers lone lead of the game came on the first possession of the game, but then the Lady Wolves subsequently tied the game on the ensuing possession and then later took the lead and never looked back in the opening minutes of the first quarter. The Lady Wolves went on a 13-2 scoring run over those opening minutes to hold a lead by that margin with just under five minutes of play remaining. However, the Lady Tigers responded with a 6-0 scoring run to close out the quarter and cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 13-8.

The second quarter saw the Lady Tigers continue to battle back as they went on an 11-7 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 20-19 with just over four minutes remaining in the second quarter. However, the Lady Wolves responded with a 14-7 scoring run to close out the quarter and take a 33-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Lady Tigers began the third quarter with another scoring run against the Lady Wolves, 8-2, and cut the Lady Wolves lead down to just two points twice in the opening minutes of the quarter as the score stood at 37-35 with just under seven minutes of play left. However, the Lady Wolves held off the Lady Tigers from taking the lead and responded 13-10 scoring run to close out the quarter and hold a 50-45 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter proved to be the major difference in the game as the Lady Wolves doubled up the Lady Tigers, outscoring them 25-12. The Lady Wolves never let the Lady Tigers get within six points of the lead in the final quarter as they cruised to the 75-57 win to end a three-game losing streak.

Sophomore guard Zykeria Anderson (Edwards) had a career night for the Lady Wolves as she set a new career-high mark in points with 31 along with two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Freshman forward Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge, La.) was the only other member of the Lady Wolves to hit double digit scoring numbers as she posted her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds along with two assists, four steals, and three blocks. For Myers, this was her second double-double of the week.

Sophomore guards Ayanna McNairy (Brookhaven) and Tandria Minor (Brandon) had nine and seven points respectively while freshman guard A'Shante Fleming (Canton) and sophomore forward Jamey McDaniel (Summit) had six points each. Freshman guard Lashaunte Payne (Magee) had four points and sophomore guard Leilani Lewis (Baton Rouge, La.) had one point to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin improves to 13-4 overall, 3-3 in conference play, and will return to conference action with a road match against Pearl River on Monday, January 30. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Wildcats is set for 6 p.m., at Marvin R. White Coliseum in Poplarville.
