Lady Wolves Bounce Back With Win Over Lady Tigers

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team returned to conference action hosting Coahoma on Thursday, February 2. The Lady Wolves beat the Lady Tigers, 62-54, giving head coach Gwyn Young career win number 1002 moving him just seven wins away from becoming the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in NJCAA history.

The Lady Wolves used an early 7-5 scoring run in the opening minutes of the first quarter to hold a lead by that margin with just under six minutes of play left. The Lady Wolves then closed out the quarter with a 5-2 scoring run to hold a 12-7 lead at the end of play.

The Lady Wolves used a 10-2 scoring run in the opening minutes of the second quarter to extend their lead to 22-9 with 6:15 left in the first half. However, the Lady Tigers responded with a 9-5 scoring to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 27-18 as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

The Lady Tigers opened the third quarter with a 12-4 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 31-30 with just under four minutes remaining. However, the Lady Wolves held on to their lead and responded with a 10-5 scoring run to close out the quarter and made the lead 41-35 at the end of play.

The Lady Wolves once again began the fourth quarter flexing their muscles with a big scoring run of 11-2 over the Lady Tigers to increase their lead to 52-37 with six minutes of play remaining. The Lady Wolves lead grew as large as 17 points at 56-39 with close to four minutes left in the game. However, the Lady Tigers responded with 15-6 scoring run down the stretch but could not overcome the Lady Wolves lead as they secured the 62-54 victory.

Sophomore guard Ayanna McNairy (Brookhaven) led the way for the Lady Wolves as she scored a new season and Lady Wolves career high of 16 points along with four rebounds, five assists, and one steal. Sophomore guard Zykeria Anderson (Edwards) just missed a double-double performance with 12 points and eight rebounds along with three assists and one steal.

Sophomore guard Tandria Minor (Brandon) had nine points, sophomore forward Kiersten Ball (Louisville) had eight points, sophomore forward Jamey McDaniel (Summit) and freshman forward Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge, La.) had six points each, while freshman guard A'Shante Fleming (Canton) had five points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin improves to 14-5 overall, 4-4 in conference play, and will return to action with a road contest against East Central on Monday, February 6. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Warriors is set for 6 p.m., at Brackeen-Wood Gymnasium in Decatur.
