Lady Wolves Split Games at BRCC Lady Bear Classic

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team opened the season with a pair of games in the BRCC Lady Bear Classic facing off against Kilgore on Friday, November 3, and Shorter Community College on Saturday, November 4. The Lady Wolves dropped the game against the Lady Rangers, 73-57, but rebounded to pick up a 76-52 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Rangers jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter outscoring the Lady Wolves, 24-17, to hold the lead at that margin. The Lady Wolves then scored 11, but the Lady Rangers added 20 to increase their lead to 16 points with the score standing at 44-28 as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

The Lady Wolves then rebounded in the third quarter adding 14 points to their total while the Lady Rangers added 16 making the score 60-42. The Lady Wolves then outscored the Lady Rangers, 15-13, in the final quarter but could not overcome the lead as the Lady Rangers sealed the win, 73-57.

"I am proud of how hard our team competed against a very talented Kilgore team," said Co-Lin head coach Dr. Britta Stephens. "Opening the season with a team as talented as Kilgore makes us better, and the loss helped prepare us for MACCC play."

Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge) led the way for the Lady Wolves in both points and rebounds with 15 and seven respectively. A'Shante Fleming (Canton) and Kiersten Haynes (Clinton) added eight points each while Fleming led the team in assists with four. Myla Harbor (Ferriday, LA) added six points on the night.

"Ceara was outstanding during this game. Despite having a sprained ankle, she led the way for our team," added Stephens. "Kiersten was our floor general and stepped up to make some big shots for us in her debut as a freshman."

Sequoia Bouldin (Hattiesburg) and Jamea Smith (Jackson) had five points each, Lashaunte Payne (Magee) had four points, Kayla Howard (Shaw) had three points, Zamiya Brown (Flowood) had two points, and Alexanjria Washington (Canton) had one point to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves used an explosive first quarter to hold a big lead over the Lady Bulldogs outscoring them, 27-15, to hold a lead at that margin at the end of play. The Lady Wolves continued their momentum in the second quarter adding 15 points to their lead while holding the opposition to 11 points making the score, 42-26, at halftime.

The Lady Wolves then nearly tripled the Lady Bulldogs scoring in the third quarter, 25-9, increasing the lead to 67-35 heading into the final quarter of play. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Wolves, 17-9, in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Wolves secured the 76-52 victory to give Coach Stephens her first win at Co-Lin.

"This win was a total team effort, and we shared the ball extremely well during the game," stated Stephens. "We are excited about getting our first team win and looking forward to building on that success."

A'shante Fleming led the team in scoring with 22 points to go along with six rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Sequoia Bouldin added 11 points, three rebounds, one assist, and a team-leading three steals while Lashaunte Payne and Jamea Smith had ten points each.

"Jamea had two big charges that give us defensive sparks," added Stephens. "Sequioa, Myla, and A'shante all shot the ball well for us during the game."

Zamiya Brown had eight points, Kayla Howard had six points, Ceara Myers had five points and led the team in rebounds with seven, while Myla Harbor and Alexanjria Washington had two points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin is now 1-1 overall and returns to action hosting South Arkansas on Tuesday, November 7, for their home season opener. Tip-off between the Lady Stars and the Lady Wolves is set for 5:30 p.m., at Mullen Gym in Wesson.
