Lady Wolves Beat Lady Bears

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team returned to action with a road trip against Baton Rouge on Tuesday, November 28. The Lady Wolves led wire-to-wire en route to a 73-60 win over the Lady Bears.

"I am extremely proud of the road win coming off of Thanksgiving break," stated Co-Lin head coach Britta Stephens. "The team played very unselfish basketball last night. We ran our offensive sets and worked the ball until we got good shots. I was very proud to see that as it was one of our keys to victory for this game."

"Our defensive pressure allowed us to get many steals and that generated fast break opportunities for us throughout the game," added Stephens.

The Lady Wolves used a big first quarter to outscore the Lady Bears, 16-11, to hold the lead by that margin at the end of play. The Lady Wolves carried that momentum into the second quarter matching their scoring total with another 16 points. However, the Lady Bears added 17 points to their total, but the Lady Wolves held a 32-28 lead as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

The teams then flipped point totals in the third quarter as the Lady Wolves scored 17 and held the Lady Bears to 16 increasing their lead to 49-44. The Lady Wolves saved their best scoring quarter for the final quarter of play as they added 24 points to their total and held the Lady Bears to 16 to secure to the 73-60 victory.

A'Shante Fleming (Canton) led all scorers with 19 points and was the second for the Lady Wolves in rebounds with seven paired with two assists and a game-leading four steals. Jamea Smith (Jackson) added 14 points and a game-leading eight rebounds paired with one assist and three steals. Myla Harbor (Farriday, LA) had nine points with one rebound, three assists, and one steal.

"A'Shante Fleming had a great night offensively. She shot the ball well and made some beautiful plays to get her teammates open shots," said Stephens. "Jamea Smith was also an impact player for us during the game. She is an anchor in the middle of our defense. She had three steals during the game, which is unheard of for a post player."

Kiersten Haynes (Clinton) had eight points with four rebounds and four assists while Kayla Howard (Shaw) had seven points with two rebounds, one steal, and a game-leading six assists. Sequoia Bouldin (Hattiesburg) and Lashaunte Payne (Magee) had six points each while Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge) had four points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin improves to 5-2 on the season and will return to action hosting Southern-Shreveport on Friday, December 2. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Jaguars is set for 12 p.m., at Mullen Gym.
