Lady Wolves Falter Late in Loss to Lady Bulldogs

UTICA – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team returned to action with a road game against Hinds on Saturday, January 13. The Lady Bulldogs beat the Lady Wolves, 66-61.

"Very disappointed to lose this game when it is one that I felt like we should have won," stated Co-Lin head coach Dr. Britta Stephens. "We came out a little flat to start the game, which is to be expected when you're playing your third game in six days, but our intensity was just not there today. Our poor rebounding and shot selection really hurt us in this game."

Both teams struggled out of the gate in the opening quarter, but the Lady Wolves held the lead over the Lady Bulldogs, 11-6, at the end of play. The Lady Wolves and Lady Bulldogs matched scoring outputs in the second quarter with both teams adding 14 points. However, the Lady Wolves held the lead at 25-20 as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

The Lady Wolves carried their momentum through to the third quarter as they outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 15-13, increasing their lead to 40-33. However, the final quarter of play was the undoing for the Lady Wolves as the Lady Bulldogs doubled their score while the Lady Wolves added 21 leading to the come from behind 66-61 win for the Lady Bulldogs.

Angel Wilkinson (Brookhaven) led the Lady Wolves in scoring with 12 points along with five rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Myla Harbor (Ferriday, LA) had 11 points with two rebounds and two assists while Jamea Smith (Jackson) had ten points and shared the team lead in rebounds with eight.

Lashaunte Payne (Magee) and Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge) had eight points apiece while Payne shared the team lead in rebounds with eight while Myers had seven rebounds. A'Shante Fleming (Canton) had seven points while Sequoia Bouldin (Hattiesburg) had five points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves with both Fleming and Bolden adding a team high four assists each.

"Myla Harbor was an offensive spark off the bench and did a great job both scoring and assisting on numerous plays," said Stephens. "Sequoia Bouldin was asked to come in and guard the best player on Hinds team and once again she stepped up and did her job for us."

Co-Lin is now 8-4 overall and returns to action opening conference play on the road at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Thursday, January 18. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Bulldogs is set for 5:30 p.m., at Dantzler Arena in Perkinston.

"Moving ahead, we have to work harder at taking better shots on offense and guarding without fouling on the defensive end," added Stephens.
