Lady Wolves Fall to Lady Bears

SUMMIT – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team returned to MACCC play with a road contest against Southwest Mississippi on Thursday, January 25. The Lady Bears beat the Lady Wolves, 84-44.

"Extremely disappointed with our lack of energy and effort in tonight's game," stated Co-Lin head coach Dr. Britta Stephens. "I did not feel like we played with very much heart or toughness."

The first quarter of the game saw the teams trading baskets and leads with the Lady Wolves jumping ahead of the Lady Bears early. However, the Lady Bears fought their way back and ultimately held a 9-7 lead at the end of play. The Lady Bears then used that gained momentum in the second quarter to grow their lead by outscoring the Lady Wolves, 27-11, leading to a 36-18 margin as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

The Lady Bears continued to flex their muscles throughout the second half as they outscored the Lady Wolves, 48-26, in the third and fourth quarters combined to seal the 84-44 win.

"One of our keys to winning the game was to dominate the glass, and we did not do that," added Stephens. "Instead, we were dominated by Southwest on the glass. We gave up far too many offensive rebounds and we committed too many early fouls during this game."

Alexanjria Washington (Canton) led the Lady Wolves offensively with 11 points and shared the team lead in rebounds with six while A'Shante Fleming (Canton) had nine points with two rebounds and led the team in assists with five. Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge) had eight points and shared the team lead in rebounds with six.

Angel Wilkinson (Brookhaven), Jamea Smith (Jackson), and Kiersten Haynes (Clinton) had three points each while Tia Richardson (Jackson), Sequoia Bouldin (Hattiesburg), and Myla Harbor (Ferriday, LA) had two points apiece. Lashaunte Payne (Magee) had one point to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

"Alex Washington came off the bench and had a really good game in the post. We need her to keep growing as a player which will give us more size and depth at the post position," stated Stephens. "Ceara Myers was also strong on the offensive end for us again."

Co-Lin is now 8-7 overall, 0-3 in conference play, and will return to action hosting East Mississippi on Thursday, February 1. Tip-off between the Lady Lions and the Lady Wolves is set for 5:30 p.m., at Mullen Gym in Wesson.
