Lady Wolves Drop Game to Lady Trojans

MOORHEAD – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team resumed conference play with a road game against Mississippi Delta on Monday, February 12. The Lady Trojans beat the Lady Wolves, 62-43.

"I was highly disappointed in our team's energy and effort in this contest," stated Lady Wolves head coach Dr. Britta Stephens. "Delta is a mature team who is very good defensively, and we had a lot of trouble scoring against them. We also did a very poor job of blocking out and rebounding in this game."

The Lady Wolves jumped ahead of the Lady Trojans in the opening minutes using a 9-7 scoring run to hold a lead at that margin with around six minutes of play left in the first quarter. The Lady Trojans responded with a 7-3 scoring run to take a 14-12 lead with 3:15 remaining. The Lady Trojans then closed out the quarter with a 6-4 scoring run to extend their lead to 20-16 at the end of play.

The second and third quarters proved to be the difference in the game as the Lady Trojans outscored the Lady Wolves, 15-5, in the second to hold a 35-21 lead at halftime. While the Lady Trojans carried that momentum over to the third quarter as they outscored the Lady Wolves, 18-10, growing their lead 53-31.

The Lady Wolves outscored the Lady Trojans, 12-9, in the fourth quarter but could not overcome the deficit in the game as the Lady Trojans secured the 62-43 win.

Alexanjria Washington (Canton) was the lone scorer in double-digits for the Lady Wolves with 16 points and led the team in rebounds with seven. Angel Wilkinson (Brookhaven) had narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and eight steals while A'Shante Fleming (Canton) had six points with two rebounds and four steals.

"Alex did an excellent job both offensively and defensively," added Stephens. "She was able to get some post ups and easy baskets on the inside for us. Cookie Wilkinson also had a good night as she was able to get several steals and turn those into points."

Jamea Smith (Jackson) had five points, Sequoia Bouldin (Hattiesburg) had three points, while Kayla Howard (Shaw) and Lashaunte Payne (Magee) had two points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin is now 10-9 overall, 2-5 in conference play, and will return to action hosting Northeast Mississippi on Thursday, February 15. Tip-off between the Lady Tigers and the Lady Wolves is set for 5:30 p.m.
